Dawson wa well ahead of the other Intermediates and chased Hageman from second place in the closing laps. Behind the leaders, Mason, ToIine and Rodriguez ba ttled c10sely, with Rodriguez passing the others to eventually capture third place. Blair got off to a bad start but progressed steadily from eighth place to fourth by the fifth lap. But on the white-flag lap, Blair took a spill, and while he remounted Toline and Mason got by. Mason slowed for a moment and looked back to make sure Blair was okay. After a brief exchange of head nods, the race was back on again. Mason and Blair diced for the remainder of the lap, with Mason holding on to the fifth spot to the checkered behind Hageman, Dawson, Rodriguez and Toline. No account of this event would be complete without mentioning the generous gesture made by Hageman. The gracious winner gave $100 of his purse money to the Danny Ornelas Benefit Fund, established by Ray Harold of Edge Sports. Throughout the day, racers gave cash contributions and purcha ed raffle tickets for a chance to win Edge engine mods, with proceed going to help injured racer Danny Ornelas am;! his family. Speaking of Edge Sports, their star mini racer, Robert Harold, was impressive aboard his YZSO as he went 1-1 to win the 80cc (12-13) class. Harold also dominated the Supermini class, again posting a perfect 1-1 moto score. Eric Poth (]ff." At the gas stop, Brewer made a few bike repairs and, even though his knee was hurting pretty badly, he decided to try to finish the race. "I found out 1 was leading Franklin by a point, and 1 just figur d 1 would give it a shot," Brewer said. The next check after the gas stop came at 75 miles out, and both rider zeroed the check quite ea ily. Check even at the 84-miJe mark was a tiebreaker check. Ramey posted a 0:13 and Brewer turned in a 0:20. There was no reset after and the trail was dusty and tough in spots. The last section wa about 10 miles long and fairly easy, with a lot of jeep roads. Ramey zeroed the check while Brewer dropped a point. "I think everybody zeroed that last check but me," Brewer said. '1 think the mileage was off and 1 was going to protest the check, but when I got the win on the tie breakers, 1didn't say anything." Ramey was understandably frustrated with the outcome of the race. "They had some good trail, but things could have been different if the checks would have been placed differently," Ramey said. "The scores would have been a lot higher. In a low-scoring 51
