ith the temperatures soaring into
the mid-90s, close to 350 racers
showed up ready to battle at the
Top Gun MX Park for round ix of the
Winters Amway Team Carolina Ultra
MX Series. The race was hailed as
Yamaha Day, but it was Suzuki-mounted Jim Chester who took home the lion's
share of the purse, gunning down all the
competition in the highly competitive
pro classes, as well as in the Over 25 A
class.
The first 125cc Pro mota saw Suzuki
of Gastonia/Hammerhead /Wisecobacked Chester grabbing the holeshot,
followed by Suzuki-mounted Stanton
Barrett, Winters Marketing/ Amway's
Marcus Hedrick, Kingsport Suzuki/Winters Marketing-backed Chad Newton
and Suzuki of Gastonia/BDR' Troy
Crisp. Chester established a small lead in
the early part of tile mota as the rest of
the field was busy trading positions. Barrett experienced a lot of pressure early in
the mota. Hedrick was the first to make
his move but soon found himself taking a
soil sample, and he spent the rest of the
mota playing catch-up. ewton assumed
the runner-up position, closely followed
by Crisp. Crisp made his pass into second only to find himseli sliding through
the grass around a sweeper moments
later. This left the door open for ewfon
to move back into second. Charlotte
Yamaha/Performance Friction/ Acerbis'
Chuck Shirley was itting back, watching
the melee, and he quietly slipped into
third by the middle of the mota. With all
the action taking p~ace, Chester made a
clean getaway and took his first mota
victory of the day. Following him across
the line was Newton, Shirley, Hedrick
and Barrett.
The second 125cc moto wa another
Chester benefit as he worked his way
into the lead early on and left the rest of
the paCK to sort it out among themselves. Hedrick fared better this mota,
keeping the rider from Lenoir, North
Carolina, honest the entire mota. ew-
