Fell first at Cheyenne Cycle Club Motocross By Stacy Jensen CHEYENNE, WY, MAY 3 Daybreak over tne cool Wyoming plains brought a whirlwind of activities as racers took to the track at the Sports Riders Association of Colorado's Cheyenne CYCle Club "Triple C Race Ranch" for a day full of fast and furious fun. Action in the 125cc Novice class was hot, and it was Doug Fell who piloted his Yamaha to the overall win. . In the first moto, Ricky Nishida hit the first turn to take home the holeshot prize as Nic Glyshaw, Keith Saloman, Fell, Jonathan Opperman and Efrem Pisano followed. The first la p progressed as the leaders quickly opened up a four-second lead. Pisano moved to third but Fell chased him, making a beautiful pass through a small set of whoops with a tough offcamber. A lap later. Brian Wilson pulled off the same pass on Pisano. This placed Fell in second, Wilson in third and Pisano in fourth. Saloman experienced problems and fell back to 10th by the third lap, while Marc Gonzales moved' into fifth. Fell began to pressure Nishida and the two battled back aJ1d forth, with Fell sliding by to take the lead on one of the open stretches of the racecourse. Fell quickly opened up a sizable lead. while Wilson caught Nishida on the white-flag lap. Nishida went rugh and Wilson squared off a tUrn to take over second. At the end of the first moto, Fell took a solid first, followed by Wilson, Nishida, Glyshaw and Aaron Allee, who had come from 18th to fifth. The second moto began with a holeshot by Glyshaw, with Nishida, Saloman, Opperman and Fell rounding out the top five positions. At the conclusion of lap one, Glyshaw maintained the lead, while Glen ~yung, Marc Gonzales, Fell and Wilson moved up to make up the top .five. Jarrod Garcia, a hometown boy who was 16th around the first turn, had moved into ninth and was starting a charge after Pisano and Saloman when the borrowed bike he was riding spit him to the ground. He eventually took a disappointing 14th plaoe. The final running order in the moto was Glyshaw with the win, with Fell, Kyung, Gonzales and Wilson closing out the top five. Fell took iirst overall with a 1-2, followed by Glysha w (4-1), Wilson (2-5), Gonzales and Nishida. Results 50 NOV: 1. Jacob Musselman (KTM); 2. Zach Larson (Act); 3. Ricky LaMontagne (Act); 4. This week, Charlie "The Edge" Venegas held off last week's double main winner, Bart Bast, and United States Speedway Champion "Ayin'" Mike Faria to take the Scratch main victory before a near-sellout crowd at the Gold Country Fairgrounds Speedway Park. However, Faria did get on the winner's board with a convincing victory in the Handicap main. Popular local icon Harlen Bast won the Second Division fea ture and Mike Browne won the Third Division main. Venegas drew the pole for the Scratch main and immediately set about gardening the dirt around the inside starting grid. Northern California's reigning champion, Bart Bast, drew gate number two, while the third and fourth lane assignments went to Timmy "The Tammer" Sisemore and Faria. Starter M,ark Joiner eased the four up to the tapes and' the race was under way, with Faria showing a slight lead as the quartet e~tered. the first turn. Far~a's lead was short-lived, however, as the entire four-man field gated ~martly and left no room for Faria to advanoe. Due in part to his inside starting position and to the dry condition of the track, Venegas came out of tum two with a modest lead over Bast, who led Sisemore and Faria. Venegas' fast start propelled ttim on a line that took ttim wide coming out of turn two, where Bast attempted to cut underneath the leader in search of the lead. But Venegas' Motion Prof Oilzall/ Arro-backed laydown GM held the lead on the one-line blue groove, wttile the rest of the field never changed positions again throughout the four-lap race. "We haven't been here much the past couple of years, and l'fIl still trying to get dialed in:' Venegas said. "But that setup we tried worked awesome in the main; l just held on." Four riders· Faria, Louis Kossuth, Sisemore and Bart Bast - all found themselves positioned on the SO-yard line for the start of the Handicap main. Rounding out the field on the 30- and 20yard stripes were Kelly Bennett and Ian Ferris, 3
