Horton hauls at
Mega Series Motocross

BLOUNTVILLE, TN, MAY 3
KTM-mounted Robbie Horton of Martinez,
Georgia, uncorked his orange machines to take
the Pepsi Family Weekend 125ee A victory with
double moto wins at Muddy Creek Raceway's
round six of the AMA U.5. Mega Series.
More than 450 riders enjoyed the revamped
MCR track in the early-morning sunshine before
a surprise shower turned the perfect, Larry Harrison-prepared circuit into slop. There was no
further precipitation, but the first-moto mud
was a defmite factor in the results of the day.
Horton took both 12Sec A holeshots on the
new uphill start, covered by Team Green's Jeff
Gibson and Su.zuki of Gastonia's Jim Chester.
Gibson leads both the 125 and 250cc A classes in
Mega Series points so far, but Chester has been
competing in the PI1 Arenacross series, where
he finished seventh overall. Though Horton has
had a checkered season so far, ranging from an
AMA Supereross podium finish to not qualifying for the heats, Horton showed no sign of the
downside of life at Muddy Creek. Horton's
Roger Arnold-tuned 125 bandled the course and
the competition for a satisfying win. Gibson took
second in the first 12Sec A moto, while Cl,ester
dealt with the mud.
'1 hate mud, man!" Chester said.
Chester slogged to third, followed by
Kingsport Suzuki's Chad Newton and Jason
Fink of Boynton Beach, Florida.
For the second round of motos, the track had
dried considerably, etl.,bling Chester to be much
more of a threal While Horton ripped along in
front, Gibson settled in second and Chester held
third. Relentless pressure from the more experienced Chester finally dropped Gibson to third,
and Chester- took aim at Horton. However,
Chester ran out of time to catch Horton and finished in the runner-up pOsition for second overall. Gibson was left with third overall.
Gibson and former fellow Team Green/miniclass rival Matt Walker of McRae, Georgia, dashed
in 250cc A racing, trading moto wins by pulling
away from the pack. By virtue of his second-moto
win, Gibson took the 250cc A win. Horton edged
out Chester for third, leaving Jason Peres "f San
Antonio, Texas, to round out the top five.
"Mat! looked good today," commented Marianne Gibson, Jeff's grandmother. Then she
added with a laugh, "We just can't get away
from him!"
As mini riders, both Jeff and Matt raced with
nu.mber 27, so the sign-up contest became "who
has to slash the number this time." The two have
always regularly traded wins.
In other racing action, Suzuki of Gastonia's
Brad Edwards had an exceUent day, taking the
250cc B class with a pair of wins and finishing
second in the 12See Bclass with a surprising 4-3.
