Sport Cycles Racing's Steve Leivan claimed the
overall victory at round five of the Missouri
Hare Scrambles Championship. The win was
Leivan's second in as many weeks and his third
of the series. Following Leivan across the line
with the runner-up ride was series points leader
Mike Windmann. Wind mann applied pressure
aU day long and spent some time in the lead, but
came up just a little short at the end of the day.
A total of 169 riders turned out on a cool day
that threatened rain. The Missouri Dirt Riders
laid out an 8-mile course that consisted mostly
01 established trails. Lap times for the leaders
were a.round 22 or 23 minutes.
Team Green rider Chris Thiele motored into
the lead at the start, followed by Windmann's
Pro Dirt-backed KTM and first-year AA rider
Mall Pursley's 360cc Husky. Leivan was slow off
the line but quickly moved into the number-four
position.
Up Iront, Thiele and Wind mann swapped
the lead a couple of times - first when Thiele
missed a sharp tum and then when Windmann
lost the front end on a slick off-camber, giving
t,he top spot back to Thiele. Just behind these
two, Lei van moved around Pursley with a slick
.inside move at the top of an uphill Only 10 seconds separated the first four racers at the end of
the first lap.
While Thiele continued to set the pace,
Leivan moved around Wind mann in the same
place in which he had passed Pursley a Lap earli~ Once into second, Leivan set out after Thiele,
with Windmann hot on his heels. Entering the
most rut~infested section of the course, Thiele
go! cross-rutted and went down. Both Leivan
add Windmann moved around, but Thiele was
ahle to move back 'around Windmann before the
end 01 the Lap. Pursley still held fourth, but was
beginning to lose time to the leaders as Chris
Caplinger began to close in on him.
Leivan controlled the lead for the entire third
lap, while Wind mann had taken over second
Irom Thiele. At the start of the fourth lap, Windmann took the lead for the second time by passing Leivan while he was refueling, which surprised Leivan. Thiele began to suffer brake
problems and lost touch with the leaders, but he
still maintained a fast pace in third place.
Caplinger ran fourth, Ken Yount moved his
Yamaha into the fifth position and Pursley held
on to sixth.
Windmann and Leivan pushed each other
along, moving further ahead of the rest 01 the
pack. Leivan tried a couple of pass attempts that
proved to be unsuccessful, wh.ile Wind mann
patiently worked through lapped riders. Near
the 5-mile mark of the fourth lap, Leivan and
Windmann made contact while flying thniugh a
stream, but neither rider went down. The nearcollision put Leivan back in &ont, a position he
would hold on to for the remainder 01 the event.
The leading duo began the fmal Lap with only a
second separating them. while Thiele fought his
brake problems nearly two minutes down in
third. Caplinger followed another minute and a
half back, with Yount another minute down.
The order remained the same to the checkers, although Yount did have to bum some gas
to maintain fifth.
