After the start, a lone rider separated from the pack before they even reached the valley, gaining a 20-second advantage after two miles. Bozarth was the man way out front, with another KTM rider, Peter Russell, holding down sec· ond. Behind the two, it was like a stampede, with bikes coming over the ridge everywhere. Bozarth raced 24 miles and sailed through the pits with a 1:'20 lead over Russell. Third was Jonah Street, who was whooped after a 14-hour, all-night drive back from the National Hare & Hound in Utah the day before. Street ran as high as second early on, when his IMS XR628 let him break 110 mph and blow by Russell on a long straight. At the end of the second lap, Bozarth slammed through a.ravine, hardly slowing for the bermed right-handed tum that led through the corral gate and into the check. Suddenly, out of the brush flew Russell, clearing the ravine with a 50-foot leap over a daredevil jump just three seconds back! Thirty-five miles to go, and the race was on. . Alas, the two leaders were into lappers so thick that the abili.ty to weave through became more important than overall speed.
