LOOKING BACK
A happy Dede Cates was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40
years ago. For the second year in a row, Cates won the AMA Women's
MX National Championship at Carlsbad Raceway... Dale Singleton
won the AMA GNC/Winston Pro Series road race at Pocono... George
Holland and Mike Brown were the big winners at the NMA National MX
Championships at Ponca City... We featured an interview with road racer
Rich Schlacter.

Our cover story 50 years ago was our coverage of the Suzie Swim Party
motocross at Indian Dunes, where motocrossers took on desert racers for
a $600 purse. It was a hot day and riders found interesting ways to cool
off... Bart Markel captured his 27th career National Championship win,
tying Joe Leonard for the all-time record. Markel's latest victory came in
Hinsdale, Illinois. A few days later, at the Peoria TT, Jim Rice won for the
sixth time on the season.
