The team of Scott Dunlavey, Chris Sena and myself rode a magnificently prepared Honda 628 to fourth overall and first in the Plus 30 Class. I'd like to thank Scott for putting it all together and letting me be a part of the team. Also a quick thanks to Sean at Shoei helmets, Bruce at American Honda, Chris at Motion Pro, Jim at 0' eal USA, Berkeley Yamaha-Honda and Alpinestar. Eddie Mulder Agua Dulce, CA Marketing & Promotion Mark Thome, Director More on Mr. Magoo Forrest Hayashi, Manager Thank you for the story on Danny <::handler ("Forging On," Issue #13, April 8). I've been curious as to his whereabouts for some time. I was there in Hangtown in 1976 as he tossed that KTM around the track like a toy. I'd never seen a bike ridden like that and from that point on, my family and I followed his career from the kid who always crashed to the motocross superstar. I was fortunate enough to meet and talk with Danny at the Mammoth race in '77 or '78 when he was riding for the Dirt Factory. He was just a guy who loved to race - like me (only much faster) - and that is how he presented himself. Motocross could"use more men like him to promote the sport. He was unspoiled and unpretentious, and some of the big stars today could learn a little from his attitude. As usual, Cycle News has done a great job on a real story. Many thanks from me and all my riding buddies for the excellent Danny Chandler Time Remembered story by Eric Johnson. When Eric's story says "mention the. name Magoo to any true moto enthusiast and a smile wiJI likely appear on their face," he really hit it on the head. "Big air, no fear, hang it out, riding the edge, 110 percent, crowd favorite." If these phrases didn't evolve from Magoo's on-track exploits, they certain- ly could have. Danny Chandler epitomizes what has made motocross the great sport that it is. A Trophy des Nations, Motocross des ations and Carlsbad U.S. GP champion, Danny is now a champion off the track as well. Danny "Magoo" Chandler - motocross legend. Thanks for the memories. Bruce Backstrom Buena Park, CA And again... Thank you for the article on Danny "Magoo" Chandler. I first saw Danny race at Argyl Park in Dixon, California, in 1973 on an 80cc Indian. I was riding in the 60cc Novice class at the time. Even back then, we were watching him. As time moved on, I was cultivating a promising career in the minis as an Expert racing a tricked-out Honda XR75. By then, Magoo was already winning the Expert Sportsman class (using milk crates at the starting gate because he couldn't even touch the ground) on his CZ 250. As it turns out, ·we lived around the corner from Danny's mechanic and longtime friend, Bill DaPrato. We wOl:lld all watch Magoo test the bikes from Mako and he would actually clear levees large enough to hold a good-Sized river. . We loved. to watch Magoo ride. Guys like Danny Chandler are one reason why we all love this sport. I'm sure many other orthem California riders of that era still relish memories of Magoo. Thanks to Cycle News for remembering, too. Phil Bakarich Danville, CA Not a cheater [ think that Team HyperCyc)e was treated totally unfairly concerning the Daytona incident. I do not believe that Carry Andrew is cheating by any means or matter. I do think that he is a very sharp guy with a small team tha t is kicking the big boys' butts and a lot of people aren't happy about it. I think this will be a big setback to AMA racing if they are disqualified. Gregory Estelle Talladega, AL Team HyperCycle's Jason Pridmore and Nicky Hayden were disqualified for illegal engine modifications after finishing first mid second in the 750cc Supersport race at Day- tona. The team has appealed the disqualification ... Editor. Barstow to Vegas Recently, while flying home from Las Vegas at about 20,000 feet, I was enjoying the view of the Mojave Desert on a crystal-clear day. From that altitude, one can see a very, very long way - especially if the people on the other side of the plane are sleeping and one can see out of their window as well. [ was reminded how ludicrous it is to assume that a motorcycle trail from Barstow to Vegas would prompt the demise of the desert tortoise; and impose jrrevocable damage to the flora and fauna of such a vast area. In fact, I would challenge anyone to pick out the last route of B-to-V. Having ridden all but two of the modern-era (1983-89) races, I could find no trace of the courses. And yet the BLM will not allow us to use the special corridor included in the Desert Protection Act to have our once-a-year race. I believe the Desert Vipers and 0-37 are working to correct this. Why not contact them and lend a hand? After all, it is your land. Dale E. Covington Crescenta, CA Those wishing to support the Desert Vipers Legal Defense Fund can do so by writing to the Desert Vipers lol/c at P.O. Box 815, Westminster, CA 92685... Editor. Ban baggies I have been riding dirt bikes for over 30 years. Like most of us, I have had to continually try to overcome the dirt-bag stereotype associated with our sport. The recent trend to dress and, in some cases, act like a member of a street gang is just another brick in the wall. Skip Bradley Breckenridge, CO Letters to the editor should be sent to Voices, Cycle News, P.O. Box 5084, Costa Mesa, CA 92628-5084, faxed to 714/751-6685 or e-mail, editor@cyclenewS.com.
