With sunny skies and moderate temperatur.es, 124 riders came to either put' up or shut up in this final race for this year's bTagging rights. With spectators lining the hillside, Holiday Cydes Kawasaki rider Lester Partlow charged into the lead as he entered the woods section to begin the first lap. Close on his rear fender was Gerald Greene, aboard the Johnson City / Pro Ac.tion/Litz Racing/FMF Yamaha. Lap one proved to be more than Partlow had bargained for as Greene was hounding him relentlessly comer after comer, searching for a chance to get by him. Then, entering a tight section, Partlow stalled his engine, and this was just the mistake Greene had been waiting for. Now in the lead; Greene could set the pace and let his big Yamaha chew around the 7-mile c<,>urse, letting the rest of the field sort out the remaining positions behind him. Kingsport KTM hotshoe Doby Leonard overcame a mid pack statt and was running in third place and closing in on Partlow, who had settled into ~ comfortable second place. With ruts becoming deeper and some of the hillsides getting slippery from a month of rain, riders were starting to pick their lines more carefully. One of those riders was Suzuki-mounted Mike Douglas, who was moving his way through lapped traffic and into a solid fourth place. Also moving up quil'k1y was Heath Salyer, riding his Kawasaki to th limit just to stay ahead of KTM rider Dale Brown for the fifth and sixth spots, respectively. Meanwh, ile, up front, Greene was having things his way with a full on~minute lead over For 2 free Cycle News stickers, send a self-addressed, stamped legal-sized envelope to: Cycle News • Free Stickers Offer P.O.
