still a battle royal, with Riley trying everything
he could to break down the leader. Montague
wouldn't crack and raced on to the victory over
Riley and Almanza.
Montague broke out into the lead in race
two, and once again it was Riley's Kawasaki
nipping at his heels. This time the too-fast top
two pulled away.from everyone else even sooner than they had in race one. The battle for the
top spot was even more intense than in the first
race, but the results remained unchanged. Montague, with his second straight win, captured the
overall win in the 125cc Pro class. Riley was a
very close second, and Almanza claimed third
overaJJ.
The 80cc race was run in a combined format
and it proved to be a most interesting contest as
the two class leaders, Scott Theobald in the 12-13
class and Matt Burris in the 6-11 division, raced
each other very closely during both races, way
out in front of everyone else. Burris took the
physical win, foil wed by JR Design's lke jost
and Red Carpet's Matt Reincke. Theobald finished second physically, but first in the 12-13
division, followed by Zack Saathoff and Chance
Bulloch.

jake Griffis wasn't affected by the surprise
winds and low temperatures that befell Cathey's
Creek MJt on its opening weekend of competition for 1998 as he won both the 65cc (7-9) and
junior Mini classes on both days of competition.
The almost 5(X) entrants enjoyed nice conditions
on the perfectly prepared joe Williams circuit at

Saturday's District 29 Benefit Race hosted a
record 210 riders, the best crowd in D-29 history
for such an event. According to D~29 officials
Shep and Peggy Langdon, the benefit added
$5500 to the district's bank accoun!.
Double class winner Griffis of I orth Carolina swept both motos in the 65 (7-9) class and
traded moto wins in JUJUor Mini with Eric Dudley of East Rat Rock, orth Carolina, to take the
win.
Griffis handled Dudley and Gastonia's
Davin Price in the 65cc (7-9) division, streaking
to win& in each moto while Dudley and Price
argued over runner-up. Dudley wound up with
the final second-place position (3-2), leaving
third place overall to Price (2-3).
Griffis' ]w1ior Mini motos were not so easy
as he m.i>ted it up with Dudley and Dustin Oates
of Siler City, Nortb Carolina. Griffis' Fox Racingbacked Kawasaki came home first in moto one,
e followed by Oates and Dudley. But. Dudley's
Roy's Garage machine grabbed the second-moto
win, just ahead of Griffis and Oates. Despite his
good ride, Dudley's 3-1 placings fell short of
securing the overall win to Griffis' 1-2 tally.
Griffis continued his good performa~ce the
next day, taking the 65cc (7-9) win, followed by
