FEB. 14 The Green Tree Inn in VictorviUe, California, was packed with bodies on Valentine's Day, but not only because of Cupid. More than 450 sponsors, racers and family members packed the high-desert inn's banquet room to honor District 37's top riders for the 1997 racing year. Food, drinks, prizes, dancing and hundreds of awards graced the evening as the staff of the Green Tree Inn worked overtime to keep the crowd happy. District 37 president Jim Geddes served as the master of ceremonies and, with the help of other district officers, he raffled off $12,000 in contingency prizes to those with lucky tickets. Rocket Rex Racing, !MS, Kawasaki of Riverside, FMF, White Brothers, Pro Circuit, Answer, American Honda, Jart, KTM of Mojave, Fineline Suspension, Terrycable, Cycle Concepts, Nationwide Cycle, Cycle Parts West and Dick Allen's Yamaha/Honda/ATK/KTM all made generous contributions to the plethora of prizes that were . raffled off throughout the night. in addition to al1 the industry products, a women's raffle was held, with one of the most popular prizes being a giant Ansel Adams photograph. Hundreds of awards for the Desert, Grand Prix, Enduro and Best of the West series were given out to those who eamed top-10 numbers in their respective classes. Some of the biggest winners in attendance included Team Green's Paul Krause, who earned the number-one Open plate in the Desert and Grand Prix divisions; Abe Baumann accepted top honors for the Vet Open Grand Prix, Desert and Best of the West divisions; Anna Cody received Desert and Grand Prix honors for topping the Women's divisions; and Donnie Morrison won the Overall Best in the West trophy. In addition to the plaques and trophies given out for racing, the prestigious awards of Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Ye'ar were handed out. Of the several nominees, district legislative officer Dave Oakleaf won Sportsman of the Year for his efforts to keep two-stroke competition in the desert. The Sportswoman of the Year award went to Veteran Steward Michelle Cassella, who has been one of District 37's most active members over the past few years both as a racer and as a board member. Cassella was also awarded with the Best in the West and Enduro nlimberone plates in the Women's division. "We obviously need to expand for our awards banqu·et next year," said Cassella about the huge turnout for this year's ceremony.
