By Greg Robe rtson PALMDAI.E.CA,JAN.18 The third a nd final round of the California Racing C lub's annua l Tro phy Series, he ld at Los Angeles County Raceway, saw Yamaha-mounted .l-l- Bona nno sweep the 125cc Novice clas s with a perfect 1· 1 score. First-moto action had Eric Willis grabb ing t he ea rl y lead , followed by Bonan n o, Mike Meadows a nd Do nn ie Durrer . Bona nno overtook Willis for th e lead on the opening lap, wi th Durrer trad in g pla ces w ith Meadows for third. Bonanno was putting in a flaw less moto, pulling away from th e pack by a couple of seco nds per lap to easily collect th e first-mo te win on his Th ou sand Oaks Yamaha /Na tionwide Cycle/O'Neal-backe YZI25 . Willis greeted the d checkers in seco nd, but not without a fight. Durrer hou nded Willis for most of the moto u ntil Mead ows g o t a ro u nd Durrer in a sweepe r . Mea d ow s wa s all over Willis on the fina l two laps but ended up a couple of bike lengths short at the finish. Durrer finis hed a close fourth over Deuce Rutledge and Dusty Nabor. When the gat e slamm ed the sand for the second- moto start, it was Bon ann o ho ldin g the advantageous insid e line into the first tum. "I went into the first comer really fast and I just started slid ing and kind of we nt off the track a littl e bit a nd let a cou ple of gu ys past," sa id Bonanno. Nabor emerged with the lead over Rutl ed ge, Colin Morrison a nd Bonanno. Morrison passed Ru tled ge an d then ou tbraked Nabor at the bottom of the over-and -under jump on lap two to move into the top spot. Bonanno zapped Nabor in the wh oops and closed in on Morrison. A lap later, Bonanno made his move for the lead. "We we re co mi ng d own off th e bridg e," Bonanno sai d, "an d he (Morrison) just started sliding a little bit because they just wa tered the track, and I took the inside and we jumped side by side a nd I had the inside for the next com er." From th a t point on , th e ra ce belonged to Bonan no as he aga in walked away with the win . "I was just cruising a t the en d , making sure I didn't cras h," added Bona nno, wh o wa nted to give a special tha nks to his d ad for a ll of hi s he lp . Morrison ran seco nd until pu ttin g his fro nt wheel over a berm and d rop pin g to the back of the pack. IX, JAN. 24 It was Mini bike Mad ness on Super Sa tu rday, hos ted by Village Cree k MX Par k, a~ 2rrl racers entered· incl udi ng Colt Humphrey, who ventured across the Red River from Okla homa to race to the wins in both the 80cc Open and 80cc • (14· 16) classes . The yo ungster took four mo to wins for both first-place spo ts amo ng a field of Texans. The specia lly plann ed event gave those d ie-hard motohead s a cha nce to get their weekend MX race fix on Saturday without hav ing to sacri fice p laying couch pota to for the followin g day's Su pe r Bowl. The 80cc Open hosted 20 riders on the gate. H u mp h re y g ra bbe d th e ho les ho t a nd nev er looked back. Sta rti ng in secon d was San Ant onio's Way Ion McC ulloch, followed by Brian Starn es, Jona than Kerr and Bran don Fu lton . Kerr passed Sta rnes on lap two for third as th e lap s counlc>d d own, with Hu mp hrey lead ing to the chec kered flag. Moto two started out muc h the sam e - w ith H um phre y out front - bu t this time around, Kerr ga ted second, wi th McCulloch in third; Starnes a nd Fu lto n fo llowed. McCulloch cha rged on Kerr to ta ke seco nd from him in th e last tum before the seco nd lap, but his inside-line atte mpt resul ted in a soil sample when Kerr held his line and McCulloch mad e contact wi th Ker r' s KX. Kerr stayed in second all th e way and Fu lton moved u p a spo t du e to McCulloch 's demi se. Kerr gra bbed the holesh ot in the 80cc (12·13) class in a tight sta rt wi th Fulto n and McCulloch off the start of the 12· rider gate. McCulloch took the lead by the end of the firs t Iap and led into lap three until he cras hed . McCulloch was quick to rem ount, bu t not before Kerr passed him for the lead. McCulloch did all he could to reel in Kerr during the next thr ee laps, finis hi ng two bike lengths behind the winner for seco nd . The seco nd m oto once aga in saw Kerr take the ho lesho t, but McCulloch was in the lead by the e nd of the fir st la p . This tim e McCulloc h kept it on two wheels as he rod e a flaw less mo ta to take the moto win and the overall by way of a 2-1 fini sh to Kerr's 1-2 for seco nd.
