The race wa s dubbed the "Davy Crockett Hare Scrambles" because the Am erican hero was born and raised in the surrounding ar ea, and a sta te park just a few miles d own the road is dedicated to the great fro ntiersman. Mike Sampson on his Bloomington Power Sports Kawasaki laid claim to the hol esh o t a nd led th e entire first la p. Blackwell came a ro u n d seco nd , Blair Bersan o on h is n ew St ephen s Sp orts Cen ter Kawasaki came through in third, Ind ian a ' s John Ma schin o on a G rea t Dav es' TM held fou rth, a nd Rodn ey Jud son on his Beave r Creek Cvcle Husaberg stayed close in fifth. On the second of five laps arou nd the 9-mile cou rs e, Blackw ell ca u g h t a n d passed Sampson . At the end of the lap , the rest of the top five remained in the sam e positions . Abou t two miles ou t on the third lap, Blackwell ran into tro uble. "I cu t in on a slowe r ride r and he fell on me , a n d w he n he d id , it b ent m y shifter so bad that I had to ride the rest o f th e la p in fir s t gear," Black w ell recalled . "I was pass ed by Sampson and O 30 Bersano but ma naged to stay ahea d of th e oth ers. I w as luc ky to h ave a pit crew that got me in and out in abou t 30 seco n d s . I was really luc ky th e sh ift shaft didn't br eak w hen they st raig h tene d it, because it was bent really bad under my footpeg ." Blackwell head ed b a ck ou t and cau ght an d pas sed Bersano and Sampso n about halfw ay thro u gh th e fou rth lap. At the finis h of the fifth and final lap, Blackwell held ab out a 30-se cond lead over Bersan o, wh o took ad vantage of the unfortunate Sampson ' s underpowered bike (he had sma shed his pipe n early clos e d earli e r in th e rac e ). Maschino came in about a minu te later, and Judson held a respectable fifth in what is his first season in the Pro class. Dave McWilliams led ea rly on h is Hon da in the 250cc A class but soon.surrendered the lead to a ha rd -charging Chris Hicks on his Sp ort Cycl e KTM. Hicks also fin ished seventh ov era ll, while Gary He ndricks garnered seco nd in the 250cc A class. Yamaha-mounted Mike Corne tt finished first in a very compe titive Vet A cla ss, with Wad e Perry o f Perry' s Kawasaki staying within striking d istance for seco nd. Harvey Whitaker on his Team Green KLX continued his winning ways in the Open A class and also took eighth overa ll. Kevin Creekmur was the onlv 200cc A rider to complete all five laps as he pu t his Yamah a in first in the class and also in to a top-2 0 overa ll finis h. In the 250cc B class, Jeff Collins on his Kawasaki and Jerem y Ketchum on his KTM finished the race w he el to w h ee l, with Collins taking the win. KDX-mounted Mike McCrea came in about thre e min u tes ahead of his nearest competitor in the 200cc B class. Mike Kirby garnered a respectabl e second on his Ho nda . William Short won the FourStroke A class over Cody Maxwell on a KLX . Mark Wood had a convi ncing win in the Vet B ranks, with Kip Ha ney in second . Ron nie Hackett bounced back from some bad lu ck in prev ious ro u nds to tak e top hono rs in the Sen ior B class . Leon Parker stayed close on his Honda for seco nd . John Giles on a Yam aha continu ed his winning wa ys in th e Su pe r Senior class. Don Rye was a resp ectable t~ second on his Honda . Jorgensen, who recentl y returned to racin g after knee surgery, looked right at home on the sandy circuit as he pos ted a 2-1 tally for the overall win. F&S-ba cked Tony Lorusso won the 250cc Pro d ivision - also with a 2-1 tally - ove r Team Gr een rider Keith Johnson. Over 425 riders from 17 sta tes and nine different countries competed in the two days of racing. In the first 125cc Pro mota; Lorusso B Ton y Lor usso won the 250cc Pro class at the fourth round of the Florida Winter AMA Mot ocross Series , held at Sunstate Raceway in Ono , Florida.
