Joh nson wanted to match his hea t-race win. so o n th e fina l lap jo hnson drove into the lead to take th e checkered flag . Faulds carne acr os s the line in second, with Letche r and Beving no t far behind. Wenz lined up for the 250cc Pro an d his first main e ve nt of the y~a r, after ea sily w inning the hea t race ea rlier in the nig ht. a nd p lanned on punishing the com pe tition in the ma in. Off the sta rt, w e nz rocketed to th e fro nt, with Fau lds , Letch er an d Bevin g close be hind. Wenz p ulled a way from the race-long ba ttle between Letche r and Bcving for th ird and Fau ld s in seco nd pla ce. Faulds slipped a way from the third-place battle w hile tryi ng to keep up with w cnz , a nd Wenz reco rded a co nvinci ng win. with Fau ld s a lonely seco nd in front o f Letch er a nd Beving. Wenz lined up for the Open Pr o main wi th a he a t-r a ce w in u nd er hi s belt a nd th reate ning skies above. but jumpt..'d the sta rt an d was relega ted to the bdck ro w. Points k-ad er Bob Anderson too k the ho lesh ot, just ahead of Pete Tapken, Fa uld s a n d Bt'ving. A n d e rs on a n d Tapken slipped away from the ba tt le for third between Fauld s an d Heving . while We nz sea rched for a wa y aroun d . MI, sm. 14 Alan Rand t took the overall wi n a t the ina ugural running of th e Tomahawk Enduro a nd by doing so aU but sealed up the 1997 District 14 Enduro Scril. S. " The ISDE ve te ran a n d KTM a ce zipped through the woods, bes ting his nea rest competition by 3 po ints with a score of 12. Finish ing St!'Cond and runner -up in the series to dat e wa s Soot Luca . Luca rod t? hi s KTM to a I S-po int fin ish a nd wo uld ha vt"made it mu ch closer had he not burned chec k seven, effecti vely handing the race 10 Kand t. Th e th ird-place finish er had the ride of the da y: Chris Gallt blasted ou t of th e 200cc B class to grab B Hig h-Point honors with a score of 17. The COU rM" sta rted nea r the Weber Lake Sta te Ca mpgrou nds a nd mean de red through the hills and dense fores t west of the- village of Wol verine. Generous resets end many IS-mph sections made for a timeke ing event for the fast rid ers ep on the first loop. The-e same conditions gave the B an d C rid ers a com p lete ly enjoyable ride. To sav the firs t sect io n - with its black, loamy dirt an'd no d us t - was fun wou ld be an understa temcnt. The rea l co ntes t s ta rted with loop two . Everyone restarted at mile 72, righ t after the gas sto p. Th e first obstacle enco untered was a wa ter hole about 200 ya rds from the resta rt . Most ride rs ma de it thro ug h to ente r a long, virgi n section o f trail tha t was wry tigh t a nd tec hn ica l. Ra nd t wa s one point quicke r here tha n Luca, gaining a lead he wou ld no t relinquish . A transpo rt section followed with a no the r reset getting ewryo ne back on time going into the fina l test sec tion. II was her e tha t Luca made his m ist ak e.
