The Vari ety Riders of Otta wa, lllinols, held their
annual Labor Day Hilldimb Shootou t at th eir
clubgrou nd s, and Kalcb No rt hrup had his best
hill climbing d ay ev er as he clai med five class
wins, th e Amateur-class fast-time awa rd , and a
beautiful travelin g troph y for win ning the fiveeven t Top Push rod Class Rider Series ro- sponso red by the Variety Riders and the Polo Rock
River Riders. Ryan Peterson claimed three claes
wi ns and delivered the fastest time in the Exhibition clas ses, which wa s also the overall fas t
time of the da y.
Nort hru p's first win came in the 750cc class,
w he re he ov ercam e Ne braska 's Kevin T ilson
and his hot-runnin g Triumph. Tilson took th e
first-round lead w ith a good 3. 42o-~ond time,
then appeared to put the class awa y in the second round w it h a b laz ing 3.140· second time.
No rt hro p was com pe ting on the Kaw asa ki triple
of his in jured broth er Jason, an d was still ' trying
to learn how to rid e it. On his seco nd rid e, Kaleb .
took his broth ers advice and pegg ed th e thr ottle
ou t of the hole and held it thPre, resu lting in a
blisterin g 3.003-sec0nd , high-flying nm over the
top . The run was good enough for the 750cc win,

In Pu shr od · cla ss act ion, Northr u p 's first. round time on th e 800cc Trium ph of 3.164 seconds took the lead into interm ission, but seco nd r ou nd act ion saw who else but Kevin Tilson
deliver a 3.0n ·second ride on his Triumph to
mov e into the lead. Northrup responded , how eve r, with a perfect full-throttle blast up the hill.

weather greeted the 56 entrants wh o
she wed up to do battle. With th is being
the last ra ce o f th e su m mer series, th e
action was ho t an d heavy as the races
d etermined who wou ld win the champiunship trop hy in most of the classes.
Scherb ha s been the ma n to beat in
thi s cla ss , as he has wo n a ll s ix rac es o f the
series . Af ter winn ing his heat, Scherb an d th e
rest of the Pros lined u p to do battl e for the feature. Appa ren tly, the extra $200 track owner Joe
Sny der add ed to th e purse for t his event had
rid er s a little anx ious . With rid ers jum ping the
gun on the first tw o starts, th e third time was a
ch arm as Sche rb got th e holesh ot , wit h Bubb a

Harder put his head down and ma de up wha t

between him self. lead er Merle Sche rb and secen d -p laced Cody Humphrey. After getti ng by
Humphrey, Hard er set his sig hts on Sche rb .
Sche rb loo ked to be in con tro l until he lost traclion coming off tum fou r on lap eight. Harder
managed to squeak by, and nev er looked. back

all year, the 125cc feature on this day was no d ifferen t. Jennifer Snyder pulled off a convi ncing
win afte r a battl e ea rly in the race wi th lead er
Harder. Snyd er and Hard er raced side by side in
the early sta ges of the race. but Snyder wa s too
smoo th and qu ick for anyone to kee p up wit h
he r pace. Hard er finis hed seco nd and Scherb finished thi rd .
