smooth with the throttle left on for the
run to the top. Casing the Harley as he
drove into the third kicker, Jason kept
the gas on, launching off the jump,
la nding smooth and making the run
look easy as he b lasted th rough the
lights. The crow d w ent nu ts before the
time could even flash onto the digital
display. He produced the only sevensecond run, with a lime of 7.8300.

Glendall Petty put his Harley against
the log in preparation for his holeshot,
Blasting to and over the first kicker, he
crossed up but managed to land cleanly
and absorb most of the stretched suspension. Back on the gas, th e Harley
kicked from side to side, digging for
traction. Once back up on the chains and
under full power, Petty set his sights on
the jump. Powering ove r and landing
long, he laid into the throttle, kicking
o u t huge amounts o f earth as he
.motored to the lights and fought off a
wheelie to clock a 9.3314. Petty's return
visit proved slower as he bounced over
the jumps, even getting his foot knocked
off the peg at one point He clocked a
slower time and relied on his first lime
to secure a third-place fInish.
" We ' ve been looking at this for a
long lime, for both of us to get up there,
together," Glen Petty said, referring to
his cousin. "Usually it's one of us or the
other, but yeah, it feels good for both us
to get up there."
Paul Zander launched a clean assault
on the SllO-foot hill with a mostly centerline climb and roared through the lights
for an 8.7277-second run that was fast
e nough to put him on the bubble for
part of the day. Once he was pushed off
the top by Jaso n Petty. Zander knew a
fast ride was needed in round two. Exiting fast out of the bo x and foHowing
with a showy cross-up, Zander bounced
over the second kicker. Settl ing in and
digging hard, the BSA barked out a
huge rooster tail. Zander's ride continued ce ntered as he launched off the
third kicker up the face of the hill. Land·
ing hard, he go t into the th rottle and
dug in for the fInish. Unfortunately. he
could only muster a 8.8197, and so the
rookie used his round-ene lime card for
second on the day.
After the race, Za nder ta lked abou t
some gearing problems and thanked fel·
low BOOcc competitor Rodney Williams.
"He had a good idea what we needed
and I doubted him," Zander said about
advice he had received from Williams.
·'But, man , we came out. ..It worked out
good."
