jum p/shelf at 32? feet and a 7Q-degree
angle up to the timing lights at 500 feet.

w eather cl eared up before th e fi rst
rid er en tered the starting box. Mike
and Margaret Mist retta, from Poags
Ho le Productions, welcomed the rid ers
a nd approx imately 3500 spectators to
their newly crea ted hill and perfectly
laid-ou t grounds.

Thom pson got the 540cc class roIling
with an ex it ou t of th e left side of th e
s ta rti ng pit. He poured it o n a fte r the
first tw o clickers as he fired his BSA up
th e s tee p u pper fa ce of th e h il l. H e
launched off the big jump at the 325-foot
m ar k and land ed mor e than 20 fe et
higher up the hill , and foug ht a wheelie
a ll th e wa y to th e li ghts . A chee r
emerged from the crowd as Thompson
rolled ov er the top, and the announcer
b a rked ou t, " N o ti m e on th a t o ne. "
Thompson's mai den voya ge on the new
hill w as not recorded du e to a ti mi ng
m al function. Thom pson' s repeat r id e
abo started left in the box. Flyin g ov er
the first kicke r, he almost looped ou t as
he lan ded on the ba ck wh eel. Thom pson
fought w hee lies for his whole rid e but
still managed to dock his first an d only
timed run of 8.3316 seco nds, which was
