from Washington's Dan Stanley to
top a national-caliber field of Experts on
hand for the annual ja ckpine Gypsieshosted AMA Professi onal short track on
the Gypsies' dubgrounds, which fea tured a $1600 purse for th e 52 professionals o n hand .

grabbed the lead on the first of the 15
laps in the Expert final - a lead tha t the
Californian from Redwood City wo uld
not relinqu ish - to head up fellow topfive Peoria IT finis her Dan Stanley and
Peoria winne r Joe Kopp and thus earn
the top payout.
Joini ng Tresser in the winner's circle
were Kentucky' s Nicky Hayd en, the
600c c Pro-A m wi n ner , a nd Georgia's
Greg Tyso r, the 250cc Pro-Am winner,
who ca pped off an incred ible ev ening
for himself aft er also taking second to
Hayden in the 600cc class.
Hayden, winner of one of the three
600cc Pro-Am heat races, sat on the po le
positi on for the 12-lap final. but Washin gton ' s joshua Cu rrey g rabbed th e
opening-lap lead - a spo t he would hold
for three laps before being passed by
Ha yd en, and th en by an o n-the -mo ve
Tysor. Tysor, riding a Hond a CR5 00,
th en chased d o wn Hayd en , who had
turned 16 ju s t o ne wee k ea rlier, but
Hayden wa s unst o pp able and ea rn ed
the w in . T ysor to ok se co n d , while
Che ney grabbed the final pod ium spo t,
a he ad of Currey, Kirk j ennem an and
Richard Marrs.

Chi coi ne, thou g h, g rabbed th e lead o n
the first of the eigh t laps , bu t he had the
13-yea r-old Feist right on his rea r wheel.
Feist , however, dropped back a no tch as
Perry Bicek, on on e of the se vera l ATKs
in the lineup, moved to second. The su rprise performance, tho ugh, came fro m
Washington's Kurt Hawk, who st ruggled throughout qualifying, but charged
from e ig h th to th i rd - a p o s it ion he
would keep, behind wi nne r C hicoi n e
and Bicek but ahead of Feist and Ronde.
Chicoine did much the sa me in the
250cc DTX final. earning his second win,
whic h was also a start-to-finish route.
Hawk, thoug h, m ad e things m isera ble
for the KX jockey, as he pu shed him to
the finish after agai n ov ercoming a poor
start. Hawk, thoug h, was thwarted o n
all of his attempts of laking Chicoine's
lead away, and thus relega ted to second ,
Third went the way of Bicek, followed
by Darrin Lip p and Ronde.
Washington's Nick Sellers als o posted a double-win tally wit h his decima tion of the 80 and 125cc ra nks . Sellers
w on both of h is he at r aces for the
accompanying pole positions, usi ng the
fro nt -row advanta ge to tak e a convi ncing w in, a head o f Mi n neso ta 's Willie
Broten, Wyoming's jacob Bath, Dani elle
Beving and N icky Martin,
Sellers' 125cc win was har der-earned ,
thou gh , as he first had to overtake Lip p,
O rego n' s Scan Lig ht and finall y Feist to
nab the nu mber-one spo t, finalizing his
tw o cla ss wins. Feist nabbed second,
a hea d o f Lipp, Light and Bath . who
filled the top five.
Despite incredibly tough competition
in th e Open A fin al, C], Beving, who
ran third through m o st o f th e m ain
even t, pl ayed it cool throu ghout th e
, e ig h t- la p per , fo llo w i n g Kentucky ' s
Roger Ha yd en and Iowa 's jerry Cheney.
Then , capitalizing on errors by Ha yden.

Schie ffer used his familiarity with the

Open Pro Twins classes, earn ing the
Sturgis, South Dakota, rider top mo ney
for his sho rt wo rk.
Riders ca me from nine states for the
race, which was a part of the 57th annual Sturgis Rally and Race Week .
Amateu r finals kicked off the series
of main events on the one-line, d rv-slick
track. Dan Ha nkerson was fastest off th e
line in the 250cc Amateur final. and he
showed the rest of the competition how
importan t a good start was by leading
every lap. H a n ke r so n picked up th e
win, ahead of Dan Deubler, who got the
best of Honda -mounted Mark Erickson
late in the race. Fourth went to the heatrace w inne r, Greg Johnston, ahead of
Roy Haines,

respectively.

"Pa ppy" Hoel track was the eig ht-lap
250cc final. w here McGee put a Yamaha
out fro nt. But his shot at glory came to
a n ea rly e n d a s b o th Sc hieffe r a n d
McClella n d div e d u nd e rne a th him ,
Schieffer, who from that po int bu ilt up a
nice lead, must've been a bit too relaxed ,
as McClelland qu ickly clo sed the gap
after shaking off the p e sky McG ee.
McClelland's drive, thoug h, fell sho rt at
the finish .
Th e tw o-r ow 600cc Pro main event
saw Coughlin put a Yamaha out front of
the a ll- s ta r line up on th e fi rs t o f th e
eight laps. Brian Isbell, Colorado's jim
Foringt on , Io wa ' s William Berger and
McClelland were all in a close-knit pack
beh ind Co ug hlin, while Schie ffer, wh o
ran o ut front in nearly all of his races,
