Joh n Co x J was very su rprised to S£'E' the a n nou nce men t th at th e U.S. round of the World Observed Trials Championsh ip w a s coming to California (" In the Wind," Issue #30, july 30). A cou p le of m on th s ago, I c hecke d th e ca le n d a r and found noth in g lis ted - so I assumed it would take a nothe r 1 yea rs fur Ca lifornia to get this ev ent again, I went to Donner a cou ple of yea rs ago and to th e previous Worl d round th ere, so me 10 yea rs before . I 'would have lo v ed to hav e g one to thi s year's rou nd, but I ha ve other plans and I can't change at this late da te. I re ad th e tr ial s coverage pre tty ca refu lly beca use it is the only part of moto rcycl ing tha t still int erests me, When it co mes to o th er kind s o f com petition, I ha ve been there an d d o ne tha t to th e point that it is pretty bor ing . I can't reca ll seeing one word abo ut the U.s. ro und in you r cov erage of the previous rou nds. It a ma ze s m e t ha t you ca n d e vo te pa g e s of p ro mo tio n to ev e r y o th er aspect of the sport and then you totally screw up something like this. I guess if it isn't fast and loud , you rea lly d on ' t give a crap. Bob Hu en emann La Honda, CA God speed, Dave My broth er a nd I atten ded th e World Supe rbi ke ra ce a t Laguna Se ca a nd I must say it was the best weekendof racing I' ve e ver seen. My go od tim e was had because of Aaron Yates backin' his GSXR600 int o every corner in the 600cc Su perspo rt ra ce, and a lso because o f Colin Edwards. 1 was ve ry dis appo in ted w hen I heard that Edwa rds would no t be racing becaus e of his wri st inju ry, bu t he more than mad e u p for that by signing au tog rap hs and ta lk ing to th e fa ns. I m et Colin on Sa turday a nd was very s u rp rised at how accessib le he wa s . H e The No rt h wes t lost a legend re cently w ith the d eath o f Dave Hardin on july 12. Dav e was the owner of the fonner Empi re Cycle in Spokane, Washington , fo r over 30 yea rs. H e was a Na tio na l Hillclimb Champion and Cana dian H illclimb Ch ampion fo r m an y yea rs . H e organized and hosted th e Paul Bunyan Cross Country races that were some of Washington's largest for many yea rs in the '60s. He also gave a start to many of this area's racers, and also o ffered man y o f them jobs. He was a master mechanic a nd machini st, and an avid outdoorsman w ho pa rticipated in every type of mo torcycle a nd snowmo bile event . H e will be g rea tl y m isse d a nd fo n d ly remembered.
