Bruce Stra tton piloted his Suzukis to the wins in
the 250("(' Open Expert and Over 25 Expert class-
es at round three of the Thor /Parts Unlimited
N o r th eas t Classic Mot ocros s series, hel d a t the
Unadilla Valley Spo rt s Center. Stratton then followed up these wins with a 1·3 finish in the 12Sc
Expert class to snare seco nd in the class. It was

Smit h, who is no st ranger to the tr ack , came
from behin d to win all four motes in the Ove r 30
Pro and Over The Hill Gang Expert classes,
although he had his problems d uring each an d
E"very mote.
In the first OTHG Expert moto. Scott Hun ter
took charge coming out of tum one an d st.' o ff

with the lead, as Smith . Don Mend enh all and a
hungry pack of 125 and 250cc Intermed iate riders all clawed for second . Smit h w as ted litt le
tim e as he mu sc led his way to the front an d
made the first-lap pass on Hunter . As the two
ap p ro a ch ed a d eep bow l turn , Sm it h d ived
Inside as Hu nter sw u ng high an d outside and
mad e the pass, e nd tripled the next uph ill to
mak e it stick. As the seven -lap mote roared on,
Smith incre ased his lead on H un ter by abo u t a
second pt:'T lap , but on lap four, Smit h was hand ed h is degree in agronomy. Hunter and
Men d enha ll came sa ilin g by with no slg n of
Smit h, but, af ter a few momen ts, Smith h ad
rem o u n ted an d came so ar-ing back. Hunt er
could smell victory and really cranked it up . but
again, Hun ter had become the hunted . Smit h
pu lled out all the stops and , rid ing like a mad man , cau ght and passed Hunte r to reg ain the
lead and take the win. Hu nter d id his best and
stayed close, finishing two second s back for second, and Mend enhall too k third .
In moto two, Hunter, fee ling the pa ng.<;. o f
de (edt from mot o one, got the jump ou t of the
gate ag ain, but Smith qu ickly moved to within
striking d istance of Hunter. Smith go t by him
usin g the fast lines on the inside of the com ers,
and d oubling and tripling everything in sigh t, to
again take away the lead and win the moto.
Smith overca me tw. pro blems in the Ovt!'t' 30
Pro motes as well. He had to recover from terri ·
ble starts in both o u t i ng~, an d got tangled up
with 125cc Intermed iate rid er Craig Traglio in
moto one, losing fOUT positions whil e trying to
catch Hunter, but he regained his rom po~u rr
and worked his wa y up to the front, pa ssing
Hunter to take the win.
