up his race engine on Saturday, was delighted. "Tha t is easily my best result in sand:' Bartolini said. "1 fell after 15 minutes, when I had moved forward to sixth the first time, but luckily I did not stall the engine. It was running so hot that I would have had big problems restarting." Yamaha teammate Peter Johansson, a double winner seven days earlier, was a distant 14th. "We just never got the jetting right today," Johansson said. "1 had no power so I got a bad start, and just could not hold off Jacky Martens, Gert Jan Van Doorn and Shayne King when they passed me on the last lap." Home favorite Van Doorn had already been down in. the first comer. "Smets leaned on me going into the turn, and I hit the marker tires and the flagpole," Smets said. "1 don't blame him. I would have done the same in his position. I had blurred vision all race after knocking my head, and had great difficulty seeing thelines." King had -lost control halfway around the first lap and taken out fellow KTM title contender Nicoll. The Brit recovered best to eighth. "I hit a soft patch and got bad drive out of the gate, and then got pushed out in fhe first turn," Nicoll said. "King just lost it and hit me from the side. After that, my only real incident came when I stalled it in the whoops. I could have been sixth if the race had run. another two.laps." Right ahead of Nicoll was a grinning Bowen. "Other guys were going faster, but only for a short time," Bowen said. "I just took it easy and made sure I didn't make mistakes. I never fell or stopped .all race. I don't think many were able to say that." Parker's return to KTM brought a 10th place, but he had held sixth at half-distance. "I just got tired," Parker admitted. "I haven't been racing enough. I'll be ready to start winning in three weeks." A torrential thunderstorm half an hour before the scheduled start of race two, during which mechanics had to push bikes the half mile from the pits to the staging area to meet the waitingzone time limit, flooded the track. After the start had been delayed twice while the organizers tried to drain the track, the decision to cancel was made just before 5 p.m. Rider spokesman Nicoll said, "There was no alternative. We walked the entire track and there was anywhere up to three feet of water before and after every jump - 80 percent of the track was flooded. No one would have ~hed." Dutch 500cc.
