As the racers approached the big step-up jump, Parks made a major move and outleaped Hunter for the lead. As Parks began running away, Puente began reeling in Hunter, and had his sights set on second place. Howev- er, as Hunter and Puente reached the sharp right-hander before the whoops, both riders tangled, with Puente's handlebars gelling stuck in Hunter's rear wheel As the two frantically tried to remount, Dejesus easily slipped by, selling his sights on Parks. Hunter remounted in third place, with Puente well behind him, but half a lap later, an eager Hunter got too aggressive in a 3/16197 3/15+16/97 3/22+23/97 3/22/97 4/5+6/97 4/12+13/97 5/3+4/97 5/24+25/97 right-hand sweeper and overshot the berm, sending his RM to the ground. A surprised Puente took advantage of Hunter's mistake and motored by to chase down second-place Dejesus and the leader, Parks. 6/28+29/97 Although Hunter did not give up, he appeared to have bike problems,.and began to cruise around the track seemingly in an effo.rt to just finish. Lap after lap, Dejesus and Puente chased Packs but could not gain any ground on the KX rider and, by lap eight, it appeared the 6/21 +22197 4/12+13/97 4/19+20/97 4/26+27/97 5/3+4/97 5/3+4/97 5/10+11/97 5/17+18/97 5/31+6/1/97 race would end with Puente taking an easy third-place finish. Howllver, Puente's thirsty Yamaha took its last sip of gas right after the white flag came out, causing him to come to a sudden halt. Meanwhile, Hunter was still cruising around the track, thinking he was out of the hunt for a third-place, $40 finish. However, as Hunter crossed the finish line on the white-flag 6/21+22/97 lap, he came upon Puente and his motionless 6/14+15/97 Yamaha. Hunter quickly wound out his Suzuki and headed for the checkered Oag for a surprising third-pla~e finish. Up front, Parks ran away With the victory and another $100, followed by Dejesus in second.
