Morrison masters
Blue Ridge HS
By Kelly Allen
MARTINSVILLE, VA, MAY 18
Martinsville native Daniel Morrison put his
home-track advantage to good use by winning
the first of two Virginia Championship Hare
Scrambles Series events to be held at the Blue
Ridge Cycle Club.
Casey Cycle City-sponsored George Greer
timed a perfect dead-engine start to lead the AA
class into the woods. Five-time series Grand
Champion Brian Hess was next in line, followed
by Tommy Handy and Jason Greer. Morrison's
last-place start did little to dampen his spirits,
however, as he found his way around the entire
class by the end of the first of the three 14-mile
loops that made up the event.
As lap two began, it became apparent that
the battle for the overall win would be decided
by either Morrison's Motor Imports Kawasaki or
the Team Creen Kawasaki ridden by Hess, the
remainder of the AA ranks having been knocked
from contention by early crashes and the blistering pace of the two front-runners.
For Hess, the game plan was simple: Follow
Morrison for a lap to learn his lines, then make
the pass and ride away with the victory. But the
pass never happened. A flat tire midway into
the second lap dealt a fatal blow to any plans he
had of motoring by Morrison, who in turn
stretched his Jead into a four~minute advantage
over the final 20 miles for his third overaJJ win
of the season.
Despite his misfortune, Hess remained on
the course for a hard-earned second-place finish.
The next rider to cross the finish line was Casey
Cycle City's Jason Greer. Greer had taken a hard
fall on the opening lap, but was able to work his
way back to the final spot on the podium.
Tommy Handy was forced to settle fourth,
ahead of early pacesetter George Greer.
Timmy Mitchell and Danny (father of over
all winner Daniel) Morrison each padded their
series points leads by notching victories in their
classes. Mitchell was able to hold off Randall
Ellison and Daryl Allman for the honors in the
250cc A ranks. while Morrison finished in front
of Darryl Campbell and Gil Griggs in the Vet A
class.
