Bowyer takes Spring MX Championships By Scooter Bell Photo by Craig Cole MARION, KS, APR. 27 Andy Bowyer won the l25/250cc Pro classes at the sixth annual Kansas Motocross Spring Championships, held at the Green Acres MX Park. But it wasn't easy as Jeff Hedden pushed Bowyer ali day long with both riders driving in from the Dallas Supercross to try to take home some of the $3000 in cash and prizes. In the first 125cc Pro moto, Headen holeshot the start with Marc Gifford in second and Bowyer third, followed by Dennis Burnett. Hedden's lead grew as Bowyer tried to get around Gifford on the opening lap. Bowyer finally made a pass on the outside and set out to chase down Hedden, but the white flag came out and Bowyer still wasn't close enough to strike Hedden. Hedden won the first mota with Bowyer second, Gifford third and Burnett fourth, thus setting the'stage for the second moto. Thousands of fans lined the track to see how the battle would shape up and it was Bowyer who came out of the first tum in the lead with Hedden on Mis back wheel. The two riders pushed each other until Hedden finally crashed as he made a move to pass Bowyer. Hedden remounted and then had to chase down Bowyer to take home the first-place Dloney. Bowyer, though, wanted none of this and he rode smart to finish with a 2-1 moto finish to take home the 125cc Pro money. Hedden's 1-2 finish gave him second with Gifford third and Burnett fourth. Cory Groves and C.l. Regier ended up fifth and sixth, respectively. in the 250cc Pro class Bowyer was able to win both motos - but not without a fight from Hedden. But Hedden crashed again in the first moto and had to come from fourth to take second. Bowyer stayed out front to win. The second mote was much of the same with Bowyer topping Hedden. Gifford and Burnett ended up third and fourth. Hedden did manage to win the dash for cash at halftime after outrunning Bowyer in the .two-Iap race. The always competitive Schoolboy class was won by Josh Luinstra with a 1-1 moto finish. Luinstra also won the BOce Senior class and took fifth in the 125cc Novice class. Luinstra was chased by Jeremy Hitsehmann in both motos, but Luinstra held him off to win both motos. As the race up front wore on, Shawn Stuart and Cory Nelson battled for the third spot. Stuart finished third overall with a 4-3 m.oto score while Nelson went 3-4 for the day. The fifth and sixth spot came down to Brett Mackey and Jeff Walter with Mackey taking fifth overall. Wet and wild at Devils Ridge MX By Jay and Sharon Hauser SANFORD,NC, APR. 27 After perfect conditions for the Saturday District 29 benefit race and the Sunday moming practice session, Devils Ridge MX was hit with rain steady rain. But the all-day rains that were forecast did not stop the over 300 riders who were locked into the points chase for the U.S. Eastern Pro-Am Motocross Series. The day's event served as the fourth round of the series and it looked as if somebody forgot to teU the racers that it was raining - the racing, after aJl, was as good as you could hope for. The 125cc A pilots really showed their stuff in the muddy conditions with some. tight raci.ng and all were aware that the day's program was cut to a one-mota format - so the moto's results would be final. Class newcomer Mark Wagner has always been known for his talents as a sand rider, but Wagner would also prove on this day to be an excellent mud rider. Wagner nailed the gate at the start of the moto aboard his Don Courtney-built ·Yamaha YZ125 to head the lS-rider field. The favorite going ·into the race, Bobby Stovall, went down in the sjjck first turn bu t remounted in a hurry and set off after the field. David Price slipped his Yarnaha onto Wagner's rear fender as they Jed Virginia's Terry Kennedy, Chad Newton and Doug Neighbors. Price, though, crashed before the end of lap one and lost two places. His quick trip to the ground allowed Wagner to open up a pretty good lead on the field, helping him keep his goggles clean in the muddy conditions. As Wagner waltzed by himself out front, Price pulled himself together and moved back around Kennedy and Newton to run in se·cond for a brief period. All the while things wete happening up front: Stovall was on a charge through the pack and he picked up Team Green and 250cc A-class winner Mitchell Hodges along the way. The pair worked into second and third, respectively, with two laps to go and had a clear view to Wagner as they'd cut his lO-second lead down to nothing. Wagner had performed perfectly up to this point, but the wet conditions soon took its toll and he went down with ]J laps to go, handing ~he lead to a goggleless Stovall and Hodges. Although down, Wagner was not out and moved right up on Hodges' rear fender as the pair tried to work around Stovall on the ~inaJ lap. Stovall, though, held on, leading Hodges while Wagner slipped again and dropped to fourth behind Prke. Kennedy remounted from an early get-off and finished fifth. The master of mud racing has to be Virginia's District 13 chairman Sonny Mitchell. Mitchell has been racing for many years and he_ won both the Over-35 and Over-40 classes. In the Over-35 class he even smoked most of the Over-25 A riders who were on the track. Results 50 (4-6): 1. Taylor Futrell (Act); 2. O.J. Ellis (KTM); 3.
