Lance Smail (KTM) roosted to the overall win with perfect 1-1 moto finishes at
round three of the AMA/Maxima Western Four-Stroke National Motocross
Series, held in conjunction with the
Hangtewn National Motocross in Sacramento, California, May 4. Shaun Kalas
(Hbg) went 2-2 for second, with Spud
Walters (Hon) in his best finish in the
series to date taking third with 4-3 finishes. Ty Davis (Kaw) and Mike Healey
(Hon) completed the top five.
Doug Blackwell (Yam) scored the overall win at round five of the AMA
National Enduro Series, which was
hosted by the Appalachian Dirt Riders
in Wellston, Ohio, on May 4. Series
points leader Michael Lafferty (KTM)
was second and defending series champion Randy Hawkins (Yam) was third.
Motocrosser Mike Young Jr. underwent
surgery at Lorna Linda University Hospital, in Lorna Linda, California, on
Tuesday, April 29, to have a rod placed
in his back after breaking three vertebrae in his lower back as a result of a
practice-session crash at the Western
Four-Stroke National Motocross round
at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California, April 27. Although the .
surgery went well and the damage to
his spine is not quite as serious as first
thought, Young still suffers paralysis in
his lower extremities. Since the operation, Young has been moved from intensive care to rehabilitation, and friends
close to Young say that'he is "doing
fine" .and resting comfortably. Young
will remain in the hospital for a few
months. To help defray his medical
costs, Husaberg will be raffling off a
Husaberg 501FC throughout the year
and tickets will begin being sold at the
Glen Helen 125/250cc National Championship MX on May 11. The winning
ticket will be drawn later in the year.
Also, a fund-raising auction. will be held
in conjunction with an autograph signing with Team Chaparral Racing members at Chaparral Cycle Supply in San
Bernardino, California, on May 9, the
Friday before the Glen Helen National,
from 6 to 9 p.m,
The third annual Pennzoil Nationals
were postponed on April 24-27 after
rain hit the Virginia Motorsports Park in
Richmond, Virginia, following the first
round of Pro eliminations. The racing
will resume in Richmond on May 10 in
what will be the fourth round of the 14race NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle
Championship.
Machinations among the tobacco giants
may lie behind the recent maneuvers
surrounding the rumored departure of
Anthony Gobert from the Lucky Strike
Suzuki team, reports Cycle News contributor Darryl Flack. It is understood that
Alain Prost's Formula One car team is
set to make a substantial deal for Lucky
Strike sponsorship now that the French
distributor of the Gauloises brand,
whose colors currently adorn Prost's
Mugen-Honda-powered cars, is to add
Lucky Strike to its stable of European
brands (British American Tobacco Co.
currently controls Lucky Strike in the
United States and Britain). In light of the
financial difficulties being suffered by
the Yamaha Power Horse team, both
Troy Corser and Luca Cadalora were
thought to be possible candidates for
Gobert's seat, should he leave the Lucky
Strike squad. Corser, however, has
reportedly rejected overtures to replace
