APR. 13 Brian Hess took full advantage of an off-weekend for the GNCC tour by returning to his home state of Virginia for a convincing overaTI win at round three of the 1997 Virginia Championship Hare Scramble Series, held on the banks of the Dan Ri ver in Danville. When a steady rainfall the day before the event soaked what is considered by many to be a very challenging course even in perfect conditions, promoter Mark Keen and his crew were forced to make wholesale changes to the 8-mile loop just hours prior to the start of the race. Nevertheless, the riders of the VCHSS were out in full force to do battle on the clay soil that mixed with water to make a very sUppery trail. Hess grabbed the holeshot on his Kawasaki in front of a strong field of AA riders, which induded opening round winner Daniel Morrison and round tvlo victor Jason Greer. By the end of lap one, Hess had built nearly a nvo-minute lead Over Morrison and the rest of the mud-covered AA class. But the biggest obstacle for any early leader to overcome in a survival race is lapped riders. This race proved to be no exception, as the early front runners found stuck riders at nearly every incline and creek crossing that they approached on lap two. Unfortunately for the contenders, however, nothing could slow down the motivated Hess who continued to hold his two-minute advantage at the end of the second loop. Greer and Morrison were the next two through the scoring barrells with Greer holding a slight edge with only one lap remaining. "But the race for the overall wa aU but over as neither rider was able to mount charge on Hess, who cruised to his first victory in 1997. Morrison was able to get around Greer for second in the late stages to pick up some valuable points toward the series points champion hip. Coming in fourth overall was defending AA series champ George Greer who spent much of his day just off the pace of Morrison and Greer's fight. The surprise of the day was a rider who usually is found in the 250<:c B ranks but felt that the time was right to try his luck against the always -tough 250<:0 A class. Not only did Andre Sandstrom survive the pitfalls that sunk the hopes Timmy Mitchell and the other entrants in his new class, but he was able to out-place severa] 'AA riders in the standings for fifth overall on the day. . Also scoring his first-ever A class win was Dean Ingram who knocked off Stephen Edmonson for the 200cr A class title. Edmondson had been undefeated in A class action since moving up from the B level at the end of last year. , Danny Morrison resumed his winning ways after skipping round two a week earlier. The .win was Morrison's second of the year over defending class champion Darryl Campbell, Phillip Doyle and the rest of a strong Vet A field. Results 01 A: Brian He,. (Kaw). AA: 1.
