On this "early Spring weekend in April, close to 200 participants gathered at Dick Allen's Yamaha / Honda / KTM / ATK dealership to enjoy the clear scenic views and warm temperatures for an" exciting 160-mile loop featuring difficult options and' bailouts, This was the second of seven events in the KTM California Dual Sport . Seri.es l're'sented by Galpin Ford. 'l1'ie 'rlde began with a trip through a private cattle ranch as elevations quickly rose to mountain ridge views and descended into fun canyon creek crossings. Along the charted route, highlights included dozens of historic viewpoints of tbe Pacific Ocean and Catalina Islands beyond the vast San Fernando, Santa Clarita and San Gabriel valley~ of residents and busin'esses below. Large varieties of scents and colors were enjoyed, from hundreds of unique desert and mountain plant life, to the many geographical, climate and elevation changes were experienced. Several parents brought along their young children as passengers to share the passions of dual sport explorations and assume the role of tour guides. Club promoter Damon Powell secured the permits and gate keys, which keep out a large majority of outdoor recreationalists, for an exclusive entry to old creek-side campgrounds, plane wreckage,. new and old mining claims and abandoned military missile sites, Routes also included trails crossing the Mexico to Canada Pacific Crest Trail system. . "This is a great opportunity to release the tensions' of big city life, or what] like to saYi 'Cutting the Leash', (hence the .name "Dog Run")' and enjoy what most local Angeleno's only see as a beautiful city backdrop," Powell said. "And j f the time is righ t, as in past years, . winter storms can make this event one of the more challenging rides available as torrents of rain water carve their way fhrough canyons we traverse." . Upon the arrival to our day's finish, participants feasted on a hearty meal prepared by dub associate, Jean Offers, as friendships reunited and emerge during the bench racing sessions. Gastouniotus takes two at Piru Motocross By Tony Alessi PIRU, CA, APR. 6 Terry Gastouniotus gassed his Yamaha of·GoIeta-backed YZ to a four-moto sweep of both the 125cc Novice and Junior Vet Novice classes dur"ing round two of the CMXA Salsa series held at Lemon Grove Cyde Park. _ Gastouniotus broke free of Dominick Luna after an early-moto battle during the first 125ee Novice class mota and went on to win. The second moto saw Gastouniorus mix it up with Rob Healy on his N-Style-backed CR, but once again it was Gas~ouniotus gaining the edge as he scooted away for the moto and overall victory. The story line was the same in the Junior Vet Novice class as Gastouniotus swept both motos en route to the overall victory where he topped George Jimenez and Ethan Daly. Casey Lytle was the day's top Pro rider as he powered his Honda of Troy-backed CR to the overall victory. The class ran a single IS-lap race which saw Ty Kady out front for more than half of the race. In the end, Kady fell victim to arm pump and Lytle took the top spot on the podium. John Ortp.er was a solid third, :while Japanese-racer Kyuzchi Yamada rounded out the top four. Chad Frank was. fastest in the 80cc Beginner class, as he took his Racers Edge-sponsored Honda to an impressive 1-1 finish over Richard Eubanks and Jeff Alessi. Miles Nail, Danny Gomez and Kyle Smith mixed it up all day long in the Pee Wee Super Stock 4- to 6-year-old division and when the dust settled it was Null nailing the overaU win over Gomez and Smith in second and thi'l'd, respectively. .
