By Greg Robertson PALMDALE, CA, MAR 30 Scott Priputen came out on top of a heated twomoto battle with first-time Novice rider Brent Gilliam for the 125cc avice-class overall honors during California Racing Club's Sunday motocross at Los Angeles County Raceway. Sparks flew as soon as the gate dropped in the first moto as Gilliam edged out Priputen, Devin Seeger and Rob Svendsen for the holeshot. Gilliam's adrenaline must have been pumping as Priputen started showing him his front fender at every opportunity in an attempt to steal the lead. Priputen was relentless on Gilliam, but Gilliam held his own and kept slamming the door shut and would continue on to win the moto in his first try out of the Beginner ranks. Akira Sunada steadily worked up to finish third over Seeger. Gilliam put his Suzuki at the front of the pack as moto two got under way, but a bobble on the opening lap allowed Priputen his first chance to run out front. Gilliam stayed with Priputen for a lap before getting a little sideways upon landing of a big double jump and ended up in the rough stuff on the side of the track, temporarily. Priputen suddenly had a five-second lead aboard his Impact Racing/Thousand Oaks Yamaha-backed YZl25 that he would maintain over Gilliam u.ntil the checkers came out. For~ mer mini speedster Seeger put in a great ride in one of his first races on a full..gize bike, corning all the way from a last-place start in moto two to sew up third overall with 4-3 finishes. Cliff jennings rode his RMl25 to a convincing two-moto sweep of the 125cc Beginner class. Another mini rider making his CRC 125cc debut was Scott Howe, who fought back from two lastplace starts to earn the second-place trophy with impressive 2-2 finishes. Ben Stuelke used consistent 4-4 rides to top Cliffs brother, Kevin, for third overall. Results 60 BEG: 1. l1mmy Mc:DarUeJ (kaw). 60 «().8): 1. Ike jOlIt (Kaw); 2. Mathew Lord O<-w); 3. Eric Mainest (Hon). ens Members of the Sports Riders Association of Colorado converged on Wyoming's capital city to experience a new track design and cool temperatures, and Mark Stevens made it an even beller day for himself by wining the 250cc Novice class with a 2-1 moto score. Riders from four surrounding states spent the day trying·out new lines, as well as some old familiar ones while they competed in the fifth race of the SRAC's points run for the gold. Riders expressed their pleasure with the new design in the form of increased entries and verbal thanks to the Cheyenne Cycle Oub. [n the 250cc Novice class, KX-rider Larry fensen snagged the holeshot and left the others behind as he headed over the long spectator tabletop and down through the whoops. jensen was followed by CR riders Dale Poledra, Paul Downs and Randall Glardon, while Stevens ran in fifth. The second lap saw jensen still holding first. Downs had advanced to second and Stevens moved up to third. Stevens worked his way around Downs on the third lap as Kevin Kelly, David Hill and Glardon battled for fourth. When the checkered flag carne out it was jensen taking the win, followed by Stevens, Downs, Hill and Glardon closing out the top five. Stevens, not wanting to take a back seat to jensen in the second moto, came on strong and led the race from start to finish. Jensen and john Hansen gave chase in second and third and would also finish in that order. Downs held fourth but lost the position on the second lap to Glardon as he was challenged. Glardon would ultimately lose the position as he went down in a tight turn giving fourth back to Downs. Glardon dropped back in the field and would finish a disappointing ninth, while Dee Thompson, who started out eighth, moved up to fifth by the checkers. Top five overa II for the day would be Stevens, jensen, Downs, Hansen and Hill. Results 50 NOV: 1. ~w Valdez (Cob). P/W NOV: 1.1\L\tin lobe (Kaw); 2. Le. Zwetzig (Kaw); 3. Thanner Thergesen (Kaw); 4. ShllM: Cornette Morrison blasts Briery Creek HS By Kelly Allen MEHERRIN, VA, MAR 23 Motor Imports-sponsored Daniel Morrison kicked off the opening round of the 1997 Virginia Championship Hare Scramble Series in grand style by taking the overall win at the inaugural Briery Creek Hare Scrambles. Excellent weather and a well-prepped, virgin trail greeted the over 200 competitors from five states who made the trek to the Dempsey Farm to compete. Casey Cycle Gty's George Greer nailed the holeshot in front of the rest of the AA c1ass then promptly turned in theiastest lap of the day before giving in to Robby Deal on lap two. Deal held a firm grip on the point position for the next three laps while Morrison. Greer and David White took turns in the runner-up spot. White's chances however were dashed when he was forced to retire with a stuck throttle midway through the race. After separating himse1f from Greer, Morrison was able to go to work on Deal for the lead. By the end of lap five Morrison had made the pass and built up a small cushion which he held to the checkers for his third career overall victory. Deal would have to settle for second on the day with Greer maintaining third to the finish. Despite spotting the first row at least a minute due to a starting-line mechanical problem, AAclass rookie jason Greer clawed his way through traffic and back into contention to post a respectable fourth overall. Steve Edmondson's 200cc A-elass winning performance was also good enough for an impressive fifth-place overall finish. KDX-pilot Dean Ingram outlasted Brian Bouma to snag the second-place trophy in the class. The holeshot of the day went to 15-year-old Melissa Barton. Barton, competing in her first race ever, shocked the crowd of spectators when she launched her 80cc machine onto the trail in front of a record number of entrants in the Women's class. Defending class champion Heather Greer made the only pass she would need to on the first lap, then fought off several charges from Barton to notch the victory. Results 0/ A:. I. Daniel Moniton (Kaw).
