Lane wins Gholson Cross
Country
By Gary Benton
GHOl.'lO ,TX, MAR. 9
Dean Lane stopped Clay Hoenshell's Pro-class
winning streak by snatching victory after a yearlong absence at round two of the Texas Cross
Country Racing Association Series. Overcast
skies and temperatures in the 60s greeted the
riders and several inches of rain from the week
before created perfect riding conditions on the
sandy, 7-mile track laid out by promoter jerry
Boren.
Pro-class action saw Gary Benton pull the
holeshot with Tracy Anders, Lane and Jeremy
Fipps close behind. Lane used a 15 mph speed
advantage on the long straights to reel in and
pass Benton before the end of lap one. Midway
through the second lap Clay Hoenshell passed
Benton and set out on the difficult task of catching Lane, who used his huge speed advantage to
hold off Hoenshell for the remaining five laps
and win by a comfortable margin. Benton managed to hold on to third after running out of gas
with hall a rnp to go.
In the Open Expert classRuss Clark took the
hoJeshot with Marty Ishmael right on his rear
fender. The two were never more than a few seconds apart and quickly put distance on the rest
of the pack. Bill Wright finished a few minutes
back with joe Holmberg and Brian Hoffman
rounding out the top five.
In the 250cc Expert crnss KX-riders Michael
Worrell and Ricky Rhodes grabbed the early
lead with DFW's Mark Faulk, Todd Gleason and
.Yernon Davidson in tow. Faulk stole the lead
halfway through lap one and would maintain
that position until lap three when Davidson and
Rhodes temporarily worked their way past him.
On rnp four, Faulk was able to push his way
back in front but, unfortunately, his energy was
fading fast and he would have to settle for third.
Gleason made his move on la p five, going from
fourth to first in one lap, and would hold it until
the checkers with Davidson and Faulk close
behind. Worrell and YZ-mounted Eric Hobbs
rounded out the field.
Gene Pannell was the big winner in the Over
45 Expert class with a four-minute lead gained
after grabbing the holeshot. Mike Gleason managed to stay close for a few rnps but in the end
settled for second.
