Vintage MX at Motocross of Marion County By Ed Gartin REDICK, FL, MAR. 3 During Daytona Bike week, Motocross of Marion County was the site of the third round of the AHRMA South East MX series and the opening round Vintage Iron Eastern US. Evolution MX series. The Florida Vintage MX Club held a rate and silent auction that raised more than $2,100 with proceeds going toward the Gainesville Autism Society. A great big thanks goes out for the donations from AHRMA, Dunlop, FMF, Metro Vintage Products, Pirelli, Vintage Iron and some of yesterday's and today's top MX stars. While the biggest winners were autistic kids in the north Rorida area, there were also some big winners on the nicely prepared track. In the opening U.S. Evolution series, Hugh's Bultacorider Tim Weaver smoked every I25/250/500cc pilot on the track while riding his 1977 Bultaco 200. Weaver made a last-lap pass on Maico 490 rider Gary Koptak after a midpack start to take· the first Evolution moto win. At the start of the second molo Koptak wenl down while leading at the finish line tabletop, taking several riders down with him. That allowed Yamaha-rider Rick Rossiter into the lead. Rossiter tried to fight Weaver off for three laps before Weaver found a way past to claim the overall. Rossiter claimed the ovcraU in the 12Sec Masters class, while Koptak remounted and claimed the 500cc Masters win. • Suzuki~mounted Robbie Massey traded moto wins with Montesa-mounted James Way to claim the 500cc Sportsman overall win. In the hotly contested 500cc Sportsman Intermediate class, it was the Maicos of Ron Winget and Dave Curci in frrst and second, respectively, ahead of Chuck Peavy on a Husky. Some close races in the Sportsman Over 30 Exp.ert class between Canadian Tim Marks and Don Lewis. Marks claimed the overall win, Lewis finished second and Way finished third.
