Vintage MX at Motocross of
Marion County
By Ed Gartin
REDICK, FL, MAR. 3
During Daytona Bike week, Motocross of Marion County was the site of the third round of the
AHRMA South East MX series and the opening
round Vintage Iron Eastern US. Evolution MX
series. The Florida Vintage MX Club held a rate
and silent auction that raised more than $2,100
with proceeds going toward the Gainesville
Autism Society. A great big thanks goes out for
the donations from AHRMA, Dunlop, FMF,
Metro Vintage Products, Pirelli, Vintage Iron
and some of yesterday's and today's top MX
stars.
While the biggest winners were autistic kids
in the north Rorida area, there were also some
big winners on the nicely prepared track. In the
opening U.S. Evolution series, Hugh's Bultacorider Tim Weaver smoked every I25/250/500cc
pilot on the track while riding his 1977 Bultaco
200. Weaver made a last-lap pass on Maico 490
rider Gary Koptak after a midpack start to take·
the first Evolution moto win.
At the start of the second molo Koptak wenl
down while leading at the finish line tabletop,
taking several riders down with him. That
allowed Yamaha-rider Rick Rossiter into the
lead. Rossiter tried to fight Weaver off for three
laps before Weaver found a way past to claim
the overall. Rossiter claimed the ovcraU in the
12Sec Masters class, while Koptak remounted
and claimed the 500cc Masters win.
•
Suzuki~mounted Robbie Massey traded
moto wins with Montesa-mounted James Way
to claim the 500cc Sportsman overall win. In the
hotly contested 500cc Sportsman Intermediate
class, it was the Maicos of Ron Winget and Dave
Curci in frrst and second, respectively, ahead of
Chuck Peavy on a Husky.
Some close races in the Sportsman Over 30
Exp.ert class between Canadian Tim Marks
and Don Lewis. Marks claimed the overall
win, Lewis finished second and Way finished
third.
The CI~ssic 12Sec Intermediate class action
saw Georgia's Chuck Cureton ride his Husky to
back to back wins over Rupp 125cc rider Perry
Nash and will Martin on a CZ
An excellent day's racing and fund raising
was had by all and special thanks' goes out to the
Blackburns of MX of Marion County, everyone
who donated, Jerry West of Supersports and
everyone who participated.
