tel closed the gap, but Oetlel ran out of time and .settled for second. Trent Ba.ir took a distant third, Marcus Biggs looked good in fourth, and Green got his YZ refired and got fifth. The second moto saw Green grab the holeshot again, with Oeltel second, Fowler third, Biggs fourth, and Thews fifth. Oettel knifed under Green in the infield sand corner before the rockers for the lead on the opening lap. Oettel opened up an advantage immediately on the field and would never look back, taking the win with a big lead. It was a great race for the second, though, with Green holding off Fowler, Bair and Thews. Thews pulled off the track with problems on the third lap, making it a three rider fight for second. Green went down in the rockers soon after, remounting in the fourth place slot, which moved Fowler and Biggs into second and third, respectively. Chaparral 6Hours of Glen Helen Grand Prix Healey and Miller endure e ~ l1 By Robert V!ln Damme ~ Cf)' N ..... l-< 40 SAN BERNARDfNO, CA., APR. 6 am IMS/John Burr Cycle's Mike Healey and Kenny Miller took the overall at the Chaparral Six Hours of Glen Helen Grand Prix. Healey and Miller, competing in the Expert/ Amateur class on a CRI25, won by completing 72 laps on the 4-mile grand prix course. Second overall and first in the Senior/Vet Expert/ AD)ateur division was the team of Bob Maxwell and Chad Blough, who were also sponsored by IMS. In the Ironman class it was Doug Yarnell taking the grueling six-hour solo win, completing 67 laps, edging out Scott Wright and Fred Conover. Healey, who was using this race as a tune-up before the opening round of the Four-Stroke National series, took the point at the drop of the green flag. Healey set a blistering pace and immediately pulled away from the pursuing pack of Maxwell, Yarnell, Conover and E.J.Wright. The competition was flagged off of the track for the first of two water breaks, right at the two-hour mark. The Healey and Miller duo were brought in first as the leader, than each team was lined up in rows of five, the way they' came off the track at the time of the break. After the IS-minute break, the rows were released.in IO-second intervals and Healey once again took the top spot. The team of Brown, Herman and Graf, who had been on the lead lap and very well in contention, had the misfortune of fouling a plug on the restart. The . team lost valuable time, which they were never able to make up. Strategy was becoming a factor midway through the race. Some teams who had taken off at a very fast pace were wishing they had not, and: others who had conserved their efforts were now me.rging to the front. Maxwell, who has won this event before, used his experience to set the pace for his team keeping the leaders accountable. E.]. Wright and Alan Kent both tried to ride in the Ironman class, out ended up teaming up' together in the end. Kent had mechanical problems and E.J. Wright, who was still on the lead lap, had developed a bad case of blistered hands. So the battle for the top solo rider was left to· Yarnell, Conover and an observant Scott Wright. Yarnell and Conover had their own private war raging, as they were pushing each other to the limit. Scott Wright fade steady, watching Yarnell and Conover to see who would last at that pace. Conover finally had enough and after a nasty get-off suddenly remembered there was a lawn that needed mowing at home, "The pace was fast' and rough, and I decided that I was going to do one more lap and then quit, and that's when [went down," Conover said. Coming down the stretch, only two teams remained on the lead lap, Healey and Miller and Maxwell and Blough. With a hand full of laps left, Blough suffered a rear flat that was quickly remedied, but the finishing order was now set. "When Maxwell rode his last leg, he got by Miller for the overall lead," Blough said. "Then I took over for the last stint and I caught a big square edged bump in the north part of the course and got a flat. I rode it for a couple of laps so Bob (Maxwell) could get ready and then he finished the race on his bike." The team of Healey and Miller received the checkers right on the six hour mark, followed by Maxwell and Blough, with third overall going to the make shift team of E.J. Wright and Kent. Yarnell hung tough and repeated as lromnan Champion with Scott Wright taking second. Chaparral SlxHours of Glen Helen San Bernardino, California Resuns:AprlI6,1997 second overall. Results: 125 B: 1. Oettel tOPS Webster MX opener By Larry Witmer NORTII WEBSTER, IN, MAR. 8 Dave Oetlel showed the 125cc B class how they do it in Wisconsin by taking the overa.ll honors in the combined 125cc A and B divisions. Great weather and a nicely prepared track greeted the riders for the opening event of the racing year in District 15 competition. The 125cc B action got underway with Nate Green on his YZ gating fastest, followed by Dan Thews and Oertel Green coasted to a stop with a foul.ed plug, possibly due to cold weather conditions, giving the lead to Kersting Cycle's Thews, and Oettel spun out and crashed in a sandy comer, remounting in fourth. "'!'e third lap saw Thew's lead shrink as Oet- fellow RM-pilot Bub Thomas, who was breath- ing down his neck. Honda-mounted Brook Dixon was putting in an inspired ride in third, but Flora was too much, and he eros ed the checkers seconds ahead of his competitors. As the 15 2.5Occ B class racers headed to the line for moto two, the excitement was very intense as another great ride from Flora was anticipated. The KJ( of Chris Kuhn jammed its way into the lead only to be displaced by the RMs of Thomas and Flora, while the CR of Dixon cruised in fourth. Flora allowed his mastery of the tricky back section of the lengthy circuit to establish a smali lead on Thomas that he would ultimately take to the finish. Thomas would take second, and Kuhn third. Sandyville, West Virginia's, Mike Morgan powered his YZ to an amazing six first-p'laee molo finishes, taking the overall wins in the Over 25, Over 30 and 2.5Occ A classes to simply domi- nate this season-opening outdoor motocross. In Pee Wee action, Adamsville's Haven Holdcroft flew his Cobra to the win in the SOcc 4- to 6-year-old class. Resuns: 50 (4-'): 1. Haven HoldO"Ofl (Cob); 2. Ryan Ivers (K'Thf); 3.
