TCCRA Cross Country series, Round 1 Hoenshell dominates opener By Gary Benton BRYSON, TX, FEB. 23 early 600 riders showed up for round one of the 25th annual Texas Cross Country Racing Series, where Clay Hoenshell was back aboard his familiar Yamaha/Suzuki Of Texas RMX 250 and had little trouble winning his 15th consecutive TCCRA race. Six inches of rain fell the week before and made getting to the track almost as fun as trying to ride it. Promoter Tracy Anders laid out a challenging la-mile course, but by race time almost two miles of the track had to be trimmed due to the muddy conditions. Danny Elmore grabbed the holeshot in the Pro class while Scott Stidd took a nasty spill in turn two separating his shoulder and ending his chances of a good showing. As the day went on, the deep ruts in turn two would claim someone from almost every class and would eventually be taken out by the afternoon races. Hoenshell quickly worked his way up from a poor start to take the lead by the end of lap one, and from there he cruised to an easy ·win. Elmore was out by lap two, the mud having gotten the best of his Kawasaki. Mike Abbott steadily worked his way through the pack to eventually take second, while David Koontz, who dominated the Over 30 Expert class last season, found himself in an unfamiliar third place at the end of his first Pro race. Oliver Benitis and Jeremy Fipps rounded out the top five. In the AA class, it was the same two riders that went at it all last season, David Culpepper and Tom Robinson. Culpepper shot to the front of the pack in tum one and then was briefly passed, by Jeremy Butler on his 125. Butler's lead was short-lived as he would crash in one of the many treacherous mudholes and later seized his bike. Robinson methodically worked his way up to second from a sixth-place start but could never gain on Culpepper's one- minute lead. In the Over 30 Expert class, Adrian Jacobs won his class wire-to-wire earning what he thought was the Expert N DAYTONA DOUG POLEN - 2nd Place, AMA 750 Supersport 3 of the top 15 on Pirelli RANDY HAWKINS - Winner, Alligator Enduro SETH HAHN - 2nd Place, CCS Unlimited Sportbike OCALA SCOTT SUMMERS - 3rd Place, GNCC ATLANTA RANDY HAWKINS - 2nd AMA Nat'l Enduro - 3rd Place, GNCC MEXICO TEAM HONDA OFF-ROAD Winner, SCORE San Felipe 250 Jamie Campbell & Tim Staab PHOENIX JAMES RANDOLPH 3rd Place, AMA Pirelli Formula Extreme BRIAN GIBBS 4th Place, AMA Pirelli Formula Extreme Both from Team Hooters Racing IIAELL' See your nearest Pirelli Dealer.
