Overall. Later he learned that AA-class
winner Culpepper was given the trophy
after TCCRA officials took a controversial vote to make AA- and AB-class riders eligible for the award.
Barry Stanley took the hard-charger
award for the weekend coming from
10th place on lap one all the way to the
front and edging out Rick Blasingaine
for the win in the 125cc Expert class.
Steve Miller, who was an early race
leader, ended up third with Jeremy
Weeks and John Weber closing out the
top five.
Bethany Jacobs duplicated her brother's performance in the Women's Expert
class by leading every lap, bringing
another first-place trophy home. Shelley
Dixon managed to stay close for a lap
but eventually finished a distant second,
with Shelly McMillon coming in a close
third.
In the Mini Expert class, Bryan Miller
put his number-one Kawasaki in front
early and never looked back to take th.e
win over Clay Leaverton and Brian
Mullin.
By the time the Amateurs took off in
the afternoon the race course had been
rerouted around most of th.e bad mudholes.
The Four-Stroke classes saw few lead
changes as Aaron Jones (Expert), Steve
Turner (Intermediate), and Jimmy
Smart (Amateur) lead every lap of their
respective classes. The 125cc Amateur
class was the biggest class of the weekend with over 40 riders, and provided
some of the best racing. David Penny
was the early leader, followed by Geoff
Speed and Jeff Pennington. By lap two
Penny and Pennington had retired and
Chris Abbott was moving up from fifth
to second behind Speed. On lap three,
Abbott motored by Speed and went on
to win by more than a minute. Speed
held off a hard-charging Darren Rogers,
who had come all the way from 10th
place on lap one. Mini Expert winner
Miller and Terry Lee rounded out the
top five.
