Von Borstel was a perfect three for three with victories in Vintage Three. Four. and Five classes. This first event of the season paid double points for all the participants. not match his pace. Eiland is returning to action after a year's absence following hip surgery and is just beginning to regain his form. Von Borstel continued to lead, but Hugh Wade was moving up through the field. Wade was able to get in the Oldakowski draft down the front straight and moved past him going in. to turn one. That's how they finished: Von Borstel, Eiland, Wade, and Oldakowski. The closest race of the day was in the Vintage Two class. Tim Joyce and Mike Mathews are beginning this season just as they left 1996; never more than a few yards apart. Mathews led the first two laps until Joyce overtook Mathews on the outside of tum four. Mathews powered past joyce on the front straight and joyce returned the favor by latebraking him into tum one to regain the lead. Mathews' Honda stretched its legs down the straight again as he held off joyce for the next two laps. joyce positioned himself just behind Mathews on the next lap for another late-:braking maneuver into tum one. Lt was Mathews again on the straight with joyce getting a better drive out of tum two to lead through the back section of pavement. Joyce held the lead this time for the final-lap showdown. Mathews shadowed Joyce through the back section preparing himself for the final maneuver. [t was not to be as 0&0 Cycles-sponsored joyce held on for the hard-fought victory. £N Results VlNT I: 1.
