OCALA, FL, MAR. 1
wo-time World Trials Champion
I)r Mick Andrews, a regular in England's pre-1965 scrambles scene,
came to see how vintage motocross'
is done on this side of the Atlantic, and he
discovered that old masters like himself
still know the fast way around the track.
The recently lengthened Ocala circuit
was in the best condition that AHRMA
had ever seen it, and over 325 entries
came out to race on a sun-baked and
unseasonably hot day.
In Over 50 Expert, the competition
was two-time AMA Grand National
Champion Dick Mann on his 1959
Monark 500 and twice World 500cc
Motocross Champion Jeff Smith aboard
a 1974 Can-Am 250. The Rickmanmounted Andrews logged a fifth-place
finish to Mann's firs t and Smith's second
in the opening moto. In the second heat,
however, Andrews established an immediate lead over Mann, with Smith holding down third place. The positions
never changed, and Andrews' 5-1
earned him a third overall to Mann's
first and Smith's second.
Andrews borrowed his machines
from another perennial master, Barry
Higgins, and the two went head to head
in the twins race. It didn't matter a bit
that they weren't racing in the same class
- Higgins was entered in Sportsman
Open Twins wHh his unit-construction
1971 Rickman BSA while Andrews was a
Premier Open Twins competitor on a
pre-unit 1960 BSA AlO.
In the first twins race, Higgins took
the early lead, with Andrews hounding
him. On the final lap, the Englishman
found a way around on a ·downhill. Higgins didn't allow the pass to last, and by
the checkered flag he held a bike-length
lead. The pair traded the lead numerous
times in the second moto, but on the last
half of the last lap Higgins got to the
froflt and made sure he stayed there.
For all of that, each took the overall
win in his class. New Yorker Tim
Weaver was a double winner in the
Sportsman Expert classes aboard his Bu1taco. In the l25s .he had to 'Contend with
Honda rider Darin Emswiler to earn the
-rs
overall Win. Then in the first·250cc race,
Weaver was pursued closely by Peter
Villa.caro, Benny Durrough and Doug
Wentzell. Moto two again saw Weaver
in the lead, chased by Wentzell and
Robert Kuhnsman.
Another double winner was BSA
rider Steve Tucker. In the Classic 500cc
Expert class, Andrews beat Tucker in
both motos, but Andrews wound..up
being disqualified after starting with the
wrong wave in the second race. Tucker's
competition in Classic 250cc Expert was
AJS rider Dan Johns, who finished
behind the Canadian in each moto.
The Sportsman SOOcc Intermediate race
was a close one. In moto one the lead was
traded among Bernard Oresti, Chuck
Peavy and Robbie Braun, with Braun
holding point position when the flag flew.
Moto two began with Oresti holding
the early lead, but Dave John Curci
worked his way around and was leading
when the checkered flag flew. Oresti's
consistent 2-2 finishes prevailed over
Curci's 5-1 for the overall win.
Oresti was in the hunt again in the
Over 40 Intermediate class. His firstmoto lead was taken over by Jeff Fisher,
riding a BSA thumper in a two-strokedominated class. The man on the move,
however, was Dale Sanders, who swept
past Oresti and set his sights on Fisher
before his charge was cut short by the
checkers. Sanders led.at the beginning of
moto two, but fell and turned over the
lead to Van Aderhold. Trailing in second
was Fisher, followed by Oresti. Fisher's
1-2 finishes gave him the overall win,
'with Oresh's 3-3 good for second overall.
Mo,ntesa rider Eric Kraft prevailed in
a hard-fought Classic 250cc Intermediate
race. Paul Havir led for most of the
opening moto, until he and Kraft spent
the last lap passing and repassing one
another. At the' finish it was Kraft in the
lead. The pair battled in the second moto
as well, with Kraft again leading across
the line for the overall win.
