Conteras cruises to win at Aztec Raceway MX By Stacy Jensen COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, FEB. 16 Mini Novice rider Marc Conteras ran through a field of 61 riders at Aztec Raceway to claim the .first Mini Novice win of the 1997 season in the Sports Riders Association of Colorado's motocross opener. . Riders from all over the Rocky Mountain area arrived early as racing began with the sun and continued until the early evening with over 500 riders in attendance. Qualifiers were held in the Mini ovice, 12See ovice, 250cc Novice and the Vet Novice classes where only the top 40 in each would survive to run the mains. Conteras, aboard his Suzuki, qualified in second position behind Ryan Conklin in the (irst qualifier with Ryan Cevetle, Micbael Colcerin and Jordan Perhager filling out the top five. The second qualifier saw Hank Kendall, Chris Phelan, Remington Way, Preston Puchek and Jeremy Wilson in positions for great gate picks for the main. The Last Chance race placed Zac.kery Saathoff, Arne Hansen, Nicholas Susco, Joey Polenchek and Rocky Rivero in the run for a chance at the number-one position in class. As the gate dropped for the main, a mad rush for that all-important first turn was under way as 40 screaming machines and adrenaline.: pumped riders came down the hill: As riders and machines emerged, there were two Suzukis in first and second. Conteras was in the lead withlames Rueiz right behind. On the third lap, Rueiz's bike seized and he took that long walk back to the pits while Chris Flesia on the move started pressing Conteras. On their final lap coming down the long straightaway - which has four short pop-up jumps before the last tum and the checkered • the leaders came into lapped traffic. The moreexperienced Conteras weaved in and out o( the riders as Flesia got caught and sandwiched in. He lost his second place to Adam Luhrs, then third to Kindell before getting by the slower riders and back on the gas. Conteras walked away with first~place points, trophy and marks, while . Luhrs, Kindell, Flesia and Phelan finished second through fifth. Results 50 NOV: 1. Mike Henderson (KTM); 2. Dalton Moyer; 3. Blaine lri5er; 4. Vincent Ramirrez; S. Cameron Phelan. P/W NOV: I. L.G. PALMDALE, CA, MAR. 2 Former Suzuki and Yamaha factory rider Scott Burnworth walked away with the Hey Day 2SOcc Pro-class win during the opening round of the CRC/DC/John Burr Cycles Vintage Hey Day Spring MX Series, held at the Los Angeles County Raceway. Right of( the first moto start. Burnworth gave a preview of things to come as he grabbed the holeshot on his borrowed YZ250 and pulled out a quick three-second lead on the first lap. Brian Myerscough held down sewnd and was being heavily pressured by Honda-mounted Tim Nash. Nash finally found a way around Myerscough on lap three, but by then Burnworth was cruising out front with a comfortable lead for the win. Burnworth timed the rubber-band start perfectly to lead Nash, Myerscough and Shawn Mcintosh as moto two began. ash hounded Burnworth (or the first couple of laps until Burnworth picked up the pace and disappeared with the win. '1 got a good start and just kinda relaxed," Burnworth said. "I think this series is a good idea. There's a ton of these bikes (pre '82) out there that just need a little work. I liked the track, the berms were powdery and bowled, you could rail them pretty good." Nash came across in the runner-up position (or second-place money. '1 tried to hang with Burnworth, but he's all of 120 pounds and I'm 230," Nash joked. "I'm happy with what I did. I had fun. Just racing with these guys is a blast." McIntosh ran third for most of the moto before going down in some unforgiving whoops, handing Myerscough third at the checkers. '1 crashed pretty hard in the whoops during practice and that pretty much detuned me for the rest of the day." Myerscough said. "I got a little bit.tired, but it was pretty fun. Next time J'm gonna try to win:' Nash returned to hold off Dan Berg for the first few laps of the Hey Day 500cc Pro class. Once around the fellow Maico rider, Berg slowly pulled away for the win. Berg went wire to wire for the second moto and overall win. $rott and Bryan Davis played around while out in front of the Hey Day 125cc Intermediate class first moto with $rott making a last-lap pass for the win. Bryan hol.eshot round two with $rott jumping past him on the back straight to take the lead on lap two. Bryan was back out front by the midway point and held off $rott at the checkers for the win. Ed Tashjian was perfect in the Vintage Novice class, going I-Ion a beautiful CZ for the overall win. Penton-mounted Nick Barrick went 2-3 for second. A broken pipe on his Elsinore dropped Robert Miller to fifth in moto one, but he bounced back (or a runner-up finish in moto two to claim third in the final standings over Mike Damon and James Hampton. After being the bridesmaid twice in one day, Tim Nash teamed with Chris Nash on a 490cc Maico for a win in the team race at the end 01 the day. Eric Cook and Berg brought their Mairo across for a close second. The team of Bill Oem and Burnworth defeated Mcintosh and Srot( Davis for third. CN Results VlNT NOV: 1. Ed Tashjian (CZ); 2.
