For the second month in a row, the F-l event
was full of surprises as the two leading competitors in the class, Chuck Graves and Curtis
Adams, were forced out of the race with
mechanical gremlins.
Paul Mumord, last month's surprise F-l winner, look the holeshot but was pushed back into
fourth after being passed by Adams, Graves and
Tokey Beck in the first lap. Two laps later, Mumford was caught and passed by Montoya on his
Ya:naha TZ25O.
The next five laps of the 12-lap event saw no
change in the top four. However, at the end of
lap eight, Graves pulled into the hot pit lane and
out of contention with a mechanical problem on
his motorcycle, leaving Adams in the lead with
Beck second and Montoya third. However,
Adams developed problems with his rear tire
and a lap later, he joined Graves in the pits.
Seeing the sudden tum of events, Montoya
quickly dosed the gap on Beck and went around
the -outside of him as the racers rounded tum
five. At the finish, it was Montoya with the win
followed by Beck second and Mumford third.
In the Coors Light/Tom Sera Racing Formula Two race, Graves was at the front of the pack
off the line but was immediately challenged and
passed by Montoya. Running in third was Steve
Teschke, who pulled alongside Graves in the
back straight of the first lap and was soon past
him, moving into second.
Near the completion of lap four in the IG-Iap
event, Brian GarbeBini had fought his way
through the middle of the pack and was suddenly right on Graves' rear lire. At the "halfway
point, Teschke suddenly slowed in the front
straight and pulled out of the race with a broken
shift mechanism. Simultaneously, Garbellini
powered past Graves in tum two and moved
himself into second.
During lap seven, Garbellini misshifted,
allowing Graves to move back into second. Garbellini remained in third, but in the remaining
laps dosed back up on Graves. However, there
just wasn't enough lime and Graves finished in
second behind the winner Montoya.
