could have disconnected the battery or
something," Polen explained later.
Instead, he carried on, hugging ~
legs around the seat to keep it in place.
Just as Bostrom took over second,
place for the first time, he too encountered the second-place curse, running
off the track in turn one after hitting
lapped traffic in a bad spot.
"That was a bit hairy," Bostrom said
later. "We came up on a slower rider
and I guess he decided to set up for the
comer as I was setting up for it too. He
put me out on the grass and I got to do
some dirt tracking, which I haven't
done for about a year or so. I saw Doug
(Polen) up there and I just went after
him. I want to thank my team for doing
such a great job. I threw away my bike
in 600 qualifying and these guys had to
work their ass off to get it ready for
that race at the last minute."
Bostrom's miscue gave Polen the
cushion he needed to auise home second, though Bostrom put on a charge
late in the race that came up just a bit
short.
"Ben was going good," Polen said.
'1t was unfortunate that he went off the
track, but I figured that would work
out pretty good because .there really
wasn't anybody behind us. I dropped
my pace down a little bit and it was
real unfortunate that the rear seat had
come off and it was just kind of changing positions for the last half of the
race. I was just trying to keep myself
down toward the motorcycle and keep
it good. I had actually speeded back up
the last lap or two because Ben was
catching up when I was running a
slower pace. 1. didn't get a lot of practice time, but the result was pretty
good."
Pridmore was ecstatic in Victory
Lane, dedicating his win to the memory
of Roger Reiman who was killed early
in the week in a BMW Battle of the Legends practice session. He later
explained his surprise at a lack of challenge for the top spot.
"I saw plus 2, plus 5, I just
couldn't believe it," Pridmore said.
(Above) CBR60lknounted Ben Bostrom
(11) battled Doug Polen for second place
but ran of the track after taking the spot
and had to settle for third.
"It was just a case of bringing it
home.. I'm really bummed for Mark
(Miller, his teammate). I'd crashed
my 600 earlier and thumped my head
pretty good. I got a massage and that
really helped."
