EVENTS McAdam masters Los Angeles MX By Greg. Robertson PALMDALE, CA, JAN. 19 The California Racing Dub and the Los Angeles County Raceway played host to the Old Timers MX Association, where Den.nis McAdam split moto wins with Jack Kell on the Saddle Glen course for the Master B-clas overalJ win. CR500 rider Norm Schjel powered his way into the first-moto ho1eshot over McAdam, W.G. Wilson and Mic Rodgers. McAdam chipped away at Schiel's advantage off the sta:rt and by lap two was showing the leader his front fender in the comers. For the next six laps, McAdam braked late and dogged Schiel in the turns, only to get roosted and have Schiel pull away on the straights. Lappers started to become an obstacle by lap nine and McAdam was able to sneak his KX250 past Schjel and into the top spot. Once out front, McAdam slowly pulled away for the win. Schiel was a comfortable second over Rodgers, who ran third for most of the race. Kell came from a last-place start to hold off Mike Chesbro on the last lap for fourlh. . McAdam took the holeshot jn round two, but Kell had other f'lans and got around him on the opening lap to set thl! pace. Chesbro hooked up with McAdam and together they camped out on KeIJ's back fender for the next few circuits of the sandy track, waiting for a mistake to happen. Kell was flawless under pressure and started to pull away at about a second a lap. Ke1l took the second-moto win with a nice lead, but it was McAdam's runner-up placing (Above) Dennis McAdam took the overall win in the Master B class at Los Angeles County Raceway in Palmdale, California. (Right) Tallon Vohland swept the 250cc Pro class during round two of the GFI Racing Winter Series North in La Grange, California. that earned the first-place trophy. Kell's 4-1 edged out Schjel's 2-4 for second overall. The battle for the Expert-class first-moto win went all the way down to the wire with Scott Freeman barely holding off Gary Willison and Jim Beck. Freeman and Herb AUen went at it in the second moto while Willison tried to work up from a midpack start. Freeman was able to shake Allen and build a lead that couldn't be challenged. Beck and Willison worked up to finish second and third, respectively. Results P/W (O-6~ 1. Lee Saul Jr. (Yam); 2. Logan Russell (yam). P/W (7-9): 1. Ken S1a.ter (Yam); 2. Vohland victorious at La Grange Motorcross By Mark Hawkins LA GRANGE CA, JAN. 19 European MX slar Tallon Vohland, who is home during the off-season, came to Ihe GFT Racing Winter MX Series in Northe.rn California and put together back-to-back moto victories in the premier 250cc 'Pro class. Rick Ryan grabbed the holeshot and the early lead in mote one. Chris Neal was close behind with Tyler Hummel. Dean Matson and Vohland in tow. Scott Myers had bad luck right off the bat, taken to the dirt by an out-of-control rid.er on the tum1.one uphill. . VohJand picked up positions slowly and was on Ryan's rear fender by the end of the third lap. Jeff Pestana worked his way up to third one lap later. Ryan countered Vohland's every move until the 6nal lap, when he apparently missed a shift coming out of a big~bermed'corner. Vohland took the inside and flew into the lead to take the checkered flag. Pestana took third with Matson fourth, and Chris Neal rounding out the top tlve. In mote two it was again Ryan with the holeshot, followed by Myers, Neal, Vohland and Hummel. Vohland wasted little time moving .himseJf into striking position behind Ryan. By the end of lap three, it was Ryan, Vohland, Myers, Hummel and Matson. On the next lap, Myers found himself on the ground after a nasty high-side get-off. With Myers out of the race, the gap between second and third was about 10 to 15 econds. This time it wasn't a mistake by Ryan that gave Vohland the lead - it was nothing but brutal speed and perfect execution of taking the high road Llround the same comer on which Vohland took the lead in the first moto. For the last half of the moto, Ryan tried to pressure Vohland into a mistake, but it JUSt wouldn't happen. VohJand finished just in front of Ryan. with Matson in a distant third. Fourth went to Pestana and fifth to Neal. Win a new TOYOTA TRUCK or CBR-900RR!
