Mud swamps Gumball Rally
By Elaine Jones
RIVERSIDE, CA, DEC. 23
Ken Maely hosted his famous Gumball Rally the
Sunday before Christmas, but Mother Nature
had other plans and turned it into the Mudball
Rally as the skies opened up and stayed that
way all day.
When it became evident that it would be
impossible to score any races, it turned into a
play day and tl10se brave or daring enough to
venture out onto the track had a great time playing in the mud. Homemade tamales and hot
dogs plus dip, cookies and soft drinks kept the
enecgy level high and, in spite of all the water
falling from the sky, the hose was going full tilt
as riders tried to get the mud off of their bodies
as well as the bikes.
World Speedway Champion Billy Hamill,
along with Greg Hancock, Dukie Errnolenko,
Josh La.rson and Bobby Schwartz, were all there
and planned on putting on a demonstration
until it became apparent that watercraft would
have been the equipment better suited for the
day.
Maely has promised that the Gumball Rally
will be run in January, and after seeing what a
good time everyone had, was talking about having a day set aside every month for just some
good fun riding - and that was met with a full
round of cheers. A lot of riders have cut their
teeth on the little oval at Maely Ranch and those
same riders are bringing their kids out for the
same experience.
Albrecht all right at GSC MX
By Rich Williams
BISHOP, CA, DEC. 8
Joel Albrecht overcame two first-moto crashes to
clinch the big money in the 250cc Pro class at the
GSC Racing motocross event held at the Bishop
Fairgrounds. The race, held as a warmup for
next week's upcoming Snowboarder vs.
Motocrosser Showdown, was full of talented
racers.
"Crusty Demons of Dirt" stars Albrecht,
'David Castillo and Sten Rassmussen had an a11out battle with local pro Stanton Barrett. Last
year, Barrett's older brother, David, won the
overall in the combination of events as top
snowboarde.r I motocrosser in the first event of
its kind, and the younger Barrett, in his brother's
absence, hopes to keep the trophy on the family
mantel.
Moto one saw Castillo take the holeshot with
Albrecht in tow, Barrett in third and Rassmussen right behind. Half a lap later, Castillo

went down in a tight right-hand comer, taking
Albrecht with him. Barrett inherited the lead
and began to pull away.
Albrecht and Castillo were up quickly and
started to chase down the leaders, but the damage was done and Barrett took first to Albrecht's
second. Castillo suffered bike problems and finished a distant third. He did not start the second
moto.
Barrett led the pack at the start of moto two,
but before two laps were in the books, the seasoned Albrecht made tbe pass on Barrett, who
had been elevated to the Pro class just a month
earlier. As Albrecht was storming to the win and
the overall, Rassmussen and Barrett tangled,
with Barrett going down, his Honda landing on
top of him.
Barrett was visibly angered and began to
stride across the infield with fists raised to confront Rassmussen, but wisdom overcame anger
and Barrett instead jumped back on his motorc.yele and proceeded to charge around the
course with surprising determination and speed,
never letting up. Barrett finished a close third to
Rassmussen and took second overall.
