Giving backtothe industr E veryone knows that racing is dangerous. Thankfully, most races end quite normally, with all the riders crossing the finish line on their bikes and heading back to the pits. But sometimes it doesn't work out this way. Sometimes racers get hurt. That's where the Clayton Foundation comes in. Charles and Sharon Clayton, the people who started it all here at Cycle News some 30 years ago, e,stablished this foundation in 1989 after they realized the need to financially help motorcycle racers who have been injured during a race. The Clayton foundation is a non-profit charity, classified as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity. One hundred percent of all donations are set aside for future distribution. Over the years, the Clayton Foundation has disbursed money to injured racers such as Dan Ingram, Ricky Smith, Davey Durelle and many others, as well as being involved with helping those in need on other levels. When a motorcycle was raffled off to help young dirt tracker Jason Fletcher, seriously injured in the 1994 Oklahoma City Half Mile, the Clayton Foundation was there to serve as the escrow account for the collected funds. When the father of a boy who had been paralyzed in a racing accident called looking for emotional support and understanding for his son, threetime World Champion Wayne Rainey kindly donated his time in the form of a telephone call to the boy to express just such support. Seven-time Grand National Dirt Track Champion Scott Parker has also donated both his time and money to the Clayton Foundation, from donating appearance money several times to earmarking a portion of funds from the sale of items at the grand opening of Race Rock International, the restaurant of which Parker is part owner, in Orlando, Florida. Noted painter Harry Miller, whose beautiful works have depicted dirt track greats from Gary Nixon to Scott Parker, has, at the request of the Farris family, donated a portion of the sale of each Rodney Farris print to the Clayton Foundation. The AMA also lends its support, the most notable instance being the organization of the fundraising golf tournament in Las Vegas during the 1995 AMA awards banquet which featured generous donations from American Honda, Smokin' Joe's Racing, K&K insurance and Harley-Davidson Motor Company. In fact, that tournament was such a success that another is in the works, this one set to take place March 4, during Daytona Cycle Week '97. The Clayton Foundation exists to help injured motorcyclists, but it can't exist without your help. If you would like to participate in the fund-raising golf tournament during Daytona Cycle Week or join our special group Qf corporate and individual contributors, contact the board secretary and treasurer Judy Klinger at 310/427-7433, or mail your donation to The Clayton Foundation, c/o Cycle News, 2201 Cherry Ave., Long Beach, CA 90806. The Clayton Foundation thanks its supporters for helping give back to the sport we all love. ~H05~IUMURA .------T HAN K S-------, To aI my Spon$OI'S and Fans Spedal1llanks To Kenny Pan 'I and the Team Green staR'.
