Kevin Varnes continues to recover from the broken leg he suffered at the 1996 Eldora Half Mile, and says that he may soon be rid of his "Doohan" external fixator. Varnes also said that it appears as though he will once again ride for Virginia tuner Johnny Goad, although a sponsorship package and motorcycle brand are yet to be determined. Landes also hinted that his son might be aboard Harley·Davidsons instead of Hondas for '97, although nothing has been confirmed. Multi-time AMA Supercross and National Motocross Champion Rick Johnson is still looking for a NASCAR Craftsman Truck ride and the series is only weeks away from starting. Johnson raced a Red Dog-backed Ford in .several races in the 1996 series, bu t the team was sold midseason and he joined the Blue Bandit racing team for some late-season races. Johnson qualified for the North Wilkesboro, Phoenix, Bakersfield, Sears Point and Las Vegas rounds, but no sponsors materialized and Johnson'S racing plans have been put on hold. "Was 1996 frustrating? You bet it was," the 32-year-old Johnson said. "But I still believe I have the right stuff to make it in one of NASCAR's major series. My seven national motocross and two world titles didn't jU'st happen, and landing a first-class ride with Chevy didn't just happen, either. r had high hopes when I joined Penske South, but it just didn't work out. My focus now, even at this late date, is making a special connection with the right team, the right sponsors. I've done this successfully throughout my racing career." Johnson has moved his family, wife Stephanie and three young children, to North Carolina. The dates for the 1997 NMA events have been released. The World Mini Grand Prix will be held at a new track in Las Vegas, April 30; the NMA Grand Nationals will be held in Ponca City, Oklahoma, July 29-August 2; and the Branson USA Nationals will take place in Branson, Missouri, October 3-5.
