Knox rocks Phillipsville MX
By John Silva
PHILLIPSVILLE, CA, OCT. 20
Kevin Knox was a double class winner in round
three of the Beebe Transport Fall Motocross
Series. Knox outraced a tough field in both th.e
Veteran Expert and Four-Stroke divisions.
Close racing, full gates and multiple divisions of talented racers were common as over
200 riders batlled for the enthusiastic fans.
Mickey Crenshaw took the holeshot in the
first Vet moto, with Tim PhiUis, Knox, Rod
!'lordstrom and Marv Miller dicing right behind.
Phillis took oontrol and passed Cranshaw on the
long "Avenue of the Giants" straightaway, and
Knox also freight-trained around Crenshaw.
Phillis and Knox fell into a fast groove and
pulled ahead of the pack. The two teaders
stayed close, with Crenshaw a distant third, and
that order rema.ined to the checkered flag.
In the second Vet moto, Knox took the lead
early on and never looked back. Phillis gave
chase for the entire six-lap moto, closing in on
Knox only to have his fellow Suzuki rider squirt
away. At the finish, it was Knox first with Phillis
second, while a consistent Crenshaw again took
third.
Knox was at it again when a mixed bag of
pounding four-strokes headed for the first turn.
Knox and Dana Bray led aboard nearly identical
KTMs, but tangled early on, handing the lead to
Marv Miller. Bray assumed second, followed by
Bo Curran, Eric Stugard, Jesse Ellen, Karl Seletch
and Donny Bailey. Knox restarted and completed lap one in lOth place. Intermediat~ranked
Miller cruised through the first two laps with
Bray second and Curran third; Selitsch was the
top Novice rider in fourth.
Knox went on a tear after his spill, and used
all of the track to pass lesser racers on his march
toward the front. As the white nag new, only
Miller remained ahead of Knox. On the last lap,
Knox blasted by Miller and snatched the moto
win. Miller's second place aced the Intermediates, with Selitsch taking third to top the Novice
class.
In the second moto, Knox and Bray again
battled off the gate. Knox finally prevailed and
Bray claimed second, followed by Miller, Bailey
and Curran.

Storrie took the lead on the next lap, and the
two stayed within two seconds of each other for
the next three laps. On the six·th lap, Storrie
began to open up a lead on Goertz and
Reynolds, as Goertz had problems and Reynolds
fell off the pace. Storrie finished with a minuteand-a-half lead over Reynolds, with Goertz
eight minutes off the leaders.
In the A ranks, the race for the overall would
be decided by eight seconds as 25Occ/Open A
rider Clint Woods took his Suzuki 250 to the top
position over A/Expert ISDE rider Lynn ~ey.
Woods and Bailey were within a oouple of seconds of each other on adjusted time until the
sixth lap.
On the sixth lap, Bailey came upon downed
AA/Pro rider and friend Cody Polls. Bailey
stopped and waited with his friend until help
arrived. During that time, Woods and secondplace 250cc/Open A rider Patrick Hohman took
the physical I~ad and adjusted overall lead.
Bailey opened up the afterburners in an
attempt to regain the overall lead. Within one
lap, Bailey caught Woods and the two riders
stayed within seconds of each other over the
next few laps.
Heading into the last lap, Bailey needed to
make up nearly half a minute to win the overall.
Woods held on to finish eight seconds faster for
his first overaU win in the series.
