Professor Hannah
1'd just like to say that Paul Carruth~rs'
article on teaching his son Kyle to nde
("Apprehension," Issue #45, November
13) wa excellent. Having Bob Hannah
do the teaching was priceless. That's like
having Chuck Yeager teach you how to
fly. I hope Kyle enjoys the sport and
becomes the next McGrath... oops, I
mean Hannah.
r would also like to comment on Skip
Norfolk's decision to leave the demanding (and lucrative) world of racing good for him. If more parents-were as
dedicated to their children as Skip, the
world would be a better place.

Wincewicz getting better
r just wanted to let his frie~ds kn?W that
National #34, John Wmcewlcz, of
Olympia, Washington, broke his back
while practicing on a motocross track
just prior .to the Sacramento Mile. John
didn't crash, he just landed hard off a
smalljurnp.
He has spent six weeks on his back in
the hospital after an operation that put
two metal bars alongside his spine, plus
a bone graft from hi hip. He'll spend
time on a walker and a brace until next
March. His comment last week was: '1'11
be back next year stronger than ever,
and going after the 600cc title." So far he
is working hard and doing.well.

Where's Davey?
The article ("m The Wind," issue #44,
ovember 6) on Team Corbin's 1997
AMA Grand National Championship
team did not include Davey Camlin.
Did someone forget to mention
Weibler's H-D/Skip Eaken Harleymounted Davey Camlin, National #27?
Does Team Corbin need to be
reminded that Davey Camlin's 1996 season included two Springfield Mile' wins
and a strong finish at the end of the season - four podiums in the last seven
races? .He finished seventh overall in the
America's weekly motorcycle newspaper
points for the 1996 season and r haven't
seen any other Team Corbin riders in
the top 10 for the year.
If Camlin is moving on, then good
luck. Remember, good things happen to
good people and in the eyes of my 8year-old son, you are a "real cool, good
guy."

·Camlin will not be a member of Team
Corbin in 1997. See "In the Wind"... Editor.
NASB says...
m response to Mr. Finkle's letter ("Voices," Issue #46, November. 20), we were
sorry to hear about your disappointment
at the NASB Daytona finale. Regarding
the grandstands, I want to make sure
that you know that all events at Daytona
International Speedway are controlled
by the Speedway. That i~cludes the
NASB/CCS races in March and October,
as well as the Daytona 200. The same
professional management that presents
the Daytona 200 presents our events.
The decision not to have open grandstands had to do with the staff support
required to do so. Our October race has
only recently become a spectator-oriented event and the Speedway management rightfully has been waiting for the
event to grow. I'm happy to say that we
have had growth the last couple of .years
and r hope we will reach the level very
soon where fans like yourself will have
grandstand access.
Your letter included a comment
about" cheap hustlers" that r assume
was directed toward the NASB management. I can only reply that ASB paid
over $700,000 to racers in 1996. We have
definitely been hustling to raise th~t
kind of money to reward our competitors, but I don't think that's cheap.
r hope you haven't been discouraged
to the point that you won't come back
for another look at' an NASB race weekend. We'll continue to offer as professional programs as we can at tracks
from coast to coast.

Bitchin'
How else could you describe the recent
Elsinore Grand Prix? Goat and GFi you're the best. This was a world-class
event. Right down to the port-a-cans.
Everyone was friendly, the course was
great, and the list goes on and on.
A special thanks to the sweep rider
who gave me a plug when r fouled off
the start. All I need to know is when do
entries come out for next year?

Not so Xtreme?
r have to agree with
the rider who
thou.ght "Formula Xtreme" is a very
silly name to the new AMA road ~ace
class that will soon seem embarrassmg.
Why don't they just call it "Formula
USA?" That's a nice name that has
already proven itself. If the AMA is
going to steal the formula, why not take
the name and all?

Finally
That r never had
seen or heard of Cycle
News until 49 years after 1'd started riding and four years after I'd quit may
have something to do with how much I
enjoy reading it. r suppose 15 years in
ebraska has something to do with it
too, but the point here is that I think you
publish a truly excellent publication.
Alan Cathcart is something more
than a rider and a writer and as a result
is a most valuable contributor. And your
Grand ational and Grand Prix reports
are all one could hope for. Well done.
What's bothered me is that the final
page of commentary from a variety of
guys often makes me wonder why a ?Oy
with nothing to say won't say nothing.
Scott Rousseau's Grand National review
in the November 6 issue was great,
though, a chance to rethink the season
with someone who was there. Thank you.
