Nt set of motos was bearable, the second round brought out the riders' desire as only the diehards survived. The Over 30 class was one of the largest classes of the day as a very competitive group of riders took on the mostly natural-terrain track. Holland put his big CR500 out front early, as the SVR circuit is one of his persona] favorites and he is a contender any time he races here. Veterans Jon Schmitz and George FanelH battled Holland throughout the day, with Schmitz eatning the moto--one win while Holland took second over Rich Sweat# leaving Fanelli in fourth. In moto two, Holland moved to the front quickly. Fanelli put in a steady ride to take second, while Schmitz wound up third and second overall in the deteriorating conditions. Schmitz had a busy day as he prevailed over Holland in the Over 25 class and later battled in the combined Pro class to take third behind the Davis brother>. In other Vet action, Barry Mayo duked it out with Ken Frankenberry in the Over 35 division, with Mayo picking up the second-mota win and the overall. Mayo also took the Over 45 win, while Frankenberry took the Over 40 win in preparation for heading ta California for the Vet Nationals. Results 50 (4-6): 1. Cody Minard (Yam); 2. SACRA..\1EmO, CA, OCT. 13 Audrey Drachman scored a double win at the 11th round of the NCMRRA Championship at Prairie City SVRA in the highly competitive ovice Supen;port dass and the Women's class. Her Novice Supersport victory earned her enough transfer points to move into the Ad vanced classes. The NCMRRA events use a tw()-hea~ one-main format The combined heat-race results detemtine starting positions for the U-Iap main event The main saw Drachman lead the charge into the first corner. Rob White and David Helmick broke loose from the field to chase the leader. Directly &ehind the front trio, David Muffett, David Potts and Chris Siebenhaar battled . with Tim Clayton. On lap four, the race was redflagged when Oayton high-sided and became entangled in his bike. After some disassembly, the bike released Oayton and he retired to the pits witr ice packs and a new appreciation of track worker> who work quickly with hand tools. Drachman again got'" strong start off the grid and led into the sweeping first tum, but this time hite and Helmick were within striking distance. White used Drachman's lines to draw a bead on the leader. With a strong drive off the final chicane, he was able to tay in Drachman's draft down the straightaway and locked onto the leader throughout the stadium chicane: On lap eight, White made his move to the outside. His drive was deva tated by a near high-side. While bulldogging his out-of-control bike, he relinquished his position to Hellmick, who slipped below him. Helmick was on the attack now, cutting away at Drachman's lead. Drachman won by a bike length with Helmick second and White third. The Women's main event had Drachman starting at the pole position and taking the holeshot Kathy Reilly, Barb Landry, Laura Douglas and EI White scrambled for positions. Landry made her bid for second on lap seven, drafting Reilly down the front straight, taking the outside line and passing on tum one. Drachman stretched her lead over the field and took the checkeced flag for the win. Results STK: 1. Michael Hann~ (Yam); 2. Je.tTY Johnson (Yam); 3. John Daker(Y.m);4. SamJohmon (yam). S/SPRT: I. Tiearney tops Fernley MX By Bob Fabel FERl'ILEY, NY, OCT 20 Nathan Tierney outraced the rest of the 125cc Junior class in round two of the six-round Sandmaster n series, which drew over 200 riders to Fernley lnternational Raceway. "This is the biggest tumoul.of rider> that we have had in many years," said Jeff McCollum, president of the Reno Over the Hill Gang. The course was basically the same as the week before. in rou.nd one, but was run in the opposite direction. A special $20 rebate was offered to first-time riders again, and nine new riders were welcomed. When the 12Scc Junior class blasted to the first tum, it was rookie Drake McElroy in the lead, followed by Tieamey, Freddy Wiechers and Sedanna 5tillmock. Casey Smith, in his first Junior race after being bumped from the 125cc Beginner class, was rudely welcomed as he had to pick himself up in the first tum to try and catch up with the rest of the class. McElroy led for the first few laps and Tiearney stayed close. Travis Vizino and Ryan Leyba battled ove.r third. AJl the riders were on the gas and clearing the big tabletop. Tiearney tried McElroy on the outside before the Mount McElroy jump, but was not allowed. Tiearney tried again at the finish-line jump at the start of lap three, but McElroy held off the charge until Tieamey got inside on the sweeper turn after the big tabletop. Tieamey began pulling away and it was Wiechers' tum to wack over McElroy. Wiechers snaked by on the inside line of a turn in the back half of the track. Tieamey had established a big lead and was styling for the crowd while Wiecher> rode in a secure second. Leyba caught up to McElroy in the next-to-last lap, but McElroy held. him off until the white flag. Leyba worked past McElroy for third, but two turns later his front wheel washed out in the sand and he went down. McElroy went around him to finish third and Leyba remounted to finish fourth. The rider> jammed into the fir>t tum in mota two. Tiearney came out leading with Wiechers in second and Vizino third. McElroy was behind at the first tum and sUd out in tum two, trying to make up for the bad start. Wiecher> passed Tieamey.and began to pull a lead. Vizino held off Leyba for the first two laps, but Leyba passed him on lap three. Wiechers and Tieamey had set a very fast pace and were beginning to catch the 125cc Intermediates who had left on the first gate. Tieamey pulled back up to Wiechers, and the two aggressive Junior> caught up to Intermediate rider Jason McNeil. who low-sided in front of Wiechers, and both riders were down. Tiear· ney moved by the pile of riders and bikes and stretched his lead to the finish.· Leybe also got past Wiechers before he got going again. Wiechers started to catch back up to Leyba and got close, but the checkered £Jag waved and he finished in third. (N Results P/W: 1. Doug Ne!lsJ~ (J(TM); 2. Nonnajean Jelln (LEM); 3.
