OCT. 13 Aaron Bergantz aced both motos in the 80cc Beginner class at the final roWld of the Hanford Motocross Association's Answer/MSR Central Valley Championship Series. Tyson Davis took the holeshot in moto one, only to drop his maehine.in the first comer with the entire field bearing down on him. The first to tag Davis' rear end was Chris Williams, sending both riders to the ground. Aaron Bergantz avoided the pileup, drifting high to take a brief lead. While Bergantz went high, Garrett Lin· nenkohl dived underneath him at the next cor~ ner and stole the lead. As those two battled up front, Les Sanders began to close in. It soon became a three-way battle for the lead. On lap two, Bergantz put a move on Linnenkohl in a tight corner. He stuffed his Suzuki inside Linnen.kohl's bike and took the lead. Bergantz quickly pulled away and rode to the checkered flag. Linnenkohl now had to defend second from Sanders and the fast-moving Jarrod Takemoto, who eventually took over second. Sanders also got by Linnenkohl, dropping him to fourth. Davis, after remounting from his first-tum crash, closed in on the top five in an effort to charge to the front, only to lay the bike down a couple of times. He had trouble the entire moto and finished fifth. In moto two, Williams got the holeshot but stalled his bike in the next comer, handing the lead to Linnenkohl. Tyler Pearce quickly moved into the second spot, followed by eventual sec· ond-moto winner Bergantz in third. Hot on Bergantz' tail was Chris Wesney in fourth with Da vis in fifth. On lap three, Bergantz sneaked by Pearce for second and gassed it to catch Linnenkoh!. Takemoto and Davis worked toward the front and advanced to third and second, respectively, by moto's end. Wesney dropped out of the top five while Sanders worked up to fourth, getting past Pearce in the closing laps. The overall winner was Bergantz, followed by Takemoto, Sanders, Davis and Linnenkoh!. MORRISON, IL, OCT. 20 Eight-time ISDE gold medalist Jeff Fredette rode his Fredette Racing Products-sponsored Kawasaki 200 over huge Jogs and deep water to his seventh win of the Moose Run Event. The Moose Run always has been known locally for its ability to stop even the best riders, and on one occasion back in 1984 only had two finishers. With many national-caliber riders now challenging the notorious Moose, things have not changed that much with the '96 event having 10 finishers out of the 300-plus starters. Fredette, a wily veteran of Midwest cross country events, faced competition including Honda's Scott Summers, KTM's Mike Lafferty, '95 winner Kirk Foster and even the old king of the woods himself, Dick Bu rleson. "I got a bad start, aroWld 14th, I think, and rode the first lap in a survival pace," Fredette said. The first 40 miles were all virgin trails. At the start of the race, local fast guy Phil Converse took the lead, but it was short-lived. By the three-mile mark, Scott Summers on a factory Honda 400 XR was in the front of the pack. Throughout the first 10 miles, Summers and '95 winner Kirk Foster rode up front. By the first gas, Summers had a p1inute-plus lead on the pack, only to be slowed by a problem with the clutch on his 400. Summers went for another 40 miles, after which he was forced to retire at the 7G-mile mark. Now it was KTM/ Moose-sponsored Lafferty's tum on the point for the next 10 miles, but aroWld the 80-mile marker, Fredette showed up on the leader's rear fender. After riding together thriugh the next 20 miles of ravines and nasty creek crossings, Lafferty ~ook a less than good line and fell victim to one of the thousands of pitfalls. Fredette would use this opportunity to leave Lafferty and the rest of the competition to battle over the leftovers. 0/ A: 1. Jeff Fredette (Kaw); 2. Mike Lnfferty (KTM); 3. Phil Converse (Hon); 4. Karnow KO's Meadowlarks MX By Carl Davis A1WiERST, OH, OCT 27 ' Vince Kamow put his Team Green Kawasakis in the winner's circle of both Pro classes at the Amherst Meadowlarks Club final race of the year. This also was the final round of the CRA Fall Series~ and a large crowd was on hand to try to secure their respective class series championships. Karnow had his work cut out as a few of northern Ohio's best riders were set to do battle. In 250ee A moto one, Karnow moved past JOM Davis in the second tum with SCR-backed Josh Demuth glued to his rear whee!. Demuth was pushing hard and moved past Kamow at midmoto and pulled a slight lead. Nearing the end of the moto, Demuth went down in the tum after the triple to give Kamow back the lead. Demuth was up quick, but lost his rear brake ~ the spill to maintain second. Meanwhile, veteran David Hand looked really good through the whoops. He closed in and passed Davis there to take over third, but on the last lap, Hand ran into a lappet at the end of the whoop section to allow Davis to take third and end the moto. In moto two, ·it was Demuth with the lead and Kamow studying his lines. Dem_uth was hauling and pulling a lead when more bad luck hit as his chain snapped, giving the lead back to Kamow with Hand a distant second and second overall. Trent Heller took advantage of his new Yamaha ride to win the l2Sce Intermediate and Extra classes. Heller fought his way past the returning Jay Hershey as the two diced it out in both classes, with Heller taking both class wins. Results 125 A: I. Vince Kamow (Kaw); 2. Josh Demuth (Yam); 3. Fay, McGonigal manhandle Elma Short Track By Clay Light ELMA, WA, OCT. 26 The final round of the nine-race Northwest Dealer's Championship Series, held at the Elma Pavilion Arena, saw Mickey Fay winning the Expert main event. National number 42 Chris Fitzhugh held off Jason Enderson and Jeff Annen to win the first of three Expert heat races. Dan Stanley, fresh off the AMA Grand National Series, beat Fay by a nose to win the second heat. The final heat saw veteran Don Wilson, the series' Expert-class points leader, pace the pack until being bumped Qut of the lead. Jerry Southworth inherited the lead to win ahead of Troy Rose. Rotax-mounted Fitzhugh jumped out in front of the 12-rider field in the Expert main event and enjoyed his lead for the majority of the caee. Fay loomed in Fitzhugh's shadow for the first half of the race while Stanley charged through traffic to close in on the two. As the race drew closer to completion, Fitzhugh yielded to Fay. Fitzhugh tried several times to get it back, but bobbied, allowing Stanley to move to second. Enderson rode his season' best to net fourth ahead of Annen, who needed desperately to finish third to win the series, which went Wilson's way despite his not making the main. Brian McGonigal put the finishing touches on his stellar ,"omeback season by winning two classes. McGonigal's first win carne in the 250cc A main where he beat Phil Scott. His next win came after a similar performance in the Over 30 final. Second to McGonigal in the Over 30 class was Dan Dickinson aboard another ,:,intage machine, a Knight-framed Honda.
