Karter Busse bid farewell to his hometown track
before leaving for Las Vegas for the winter, convincingly acing both motos in the 250cc A class
and finishing a respectable third in 125cc A
behind LBZ-backed Mike Kann arid Torque
Center-supported Eron Ezerins at the Randy
Schuessler Memorial Motocross.
Busse had extra incentive to win, as his
sweep of the 250cc class A left Young America
team manager Tryce Welch on the losing end of
a bet which resulted in a buzz cut for Welch,
courtesy of Busse.
Busse was on fire during the first 250cc A
moto, setting a blistering pace out front However, the second-moto win was made easier
when leader Ezerins went down in the back-section sand corner, breaking hIs clutch lever in the
process.
Scoring in the 250cc A class was tighter than
usual, with three riders Iiaving six total points.
Second-moto fin.ishes determined the overall
order behind Busse, with Tim Roth in second,
jason Warner in third and Ezerins finishing an
uncustomary fourth overall.
Ezerins and Warner were two of many riders
displaying a "z" on their number plates, in
recognition of the hospitalized and critically
injured Scott Zampach, a national champion
road racer and local motocrosser.
Ezerins took the 125cc A first-mota hoJesho~
followed by Witmer, Freeport Honda/Kawasaki's
Roy afzger, Busse and Kann. By the second lap,
Busse had moved into second ahead of Kann and
Nafzger, but became another victim of the backsection sand tum, falling back to fourth behind
Ezerins, Kann and a£zger at the checkers.
. Ezerins was once again mistake-free in the
second moto, taking the checkers ahead of
Busse, Kann and Warner. While holding down
third, Kann pulled off a heel-c1kker over the
plateau.
Kann also dominated the 125ee junior class
with two moto fini hes, beating Darby Fowler's
4-2 and Dustin Keuntjes' 2-4.
A veteran battle was waged between Roy
Nafzger and Tom Dretzka Ii. the Over 25 Masters. The two Kawasaki riders were swapping
positiol\s in both motos, with Dretzka taking
both motos and the overall. Nafzger was leading
the second moto, but left the door open a split
second too long.

HOLUSTER, CA, OCT. 20
Rick Doughty took the overall win in the Premier 500cc Expert class at the 15th and final
round of the AHRMA/Vintage Iron National
Motocross Series at Hollister Hills SVRA.
In moto one, Dick Mann, aboard his
Swedish-built Monark 500, and Doughty, on a
'62 BSA GSSOO, nailed the holeshot side by side,
and only after the third turn was Doughty a bike
length ahead with the lead. For the next two
laps, the two hammered away at each other,
neck and neck and knocking elbows. Doughty
muscled ahead with the lead·as Mann, tracking
his quarry, looked for a weak spot.
Near the end of lap three, Mann made his
move, blasting through a high-speed turn and
slipped by Doughty as the two raced to the
steep drop-off. Doughty rode frantically for the
remaining two laps,· but couldn't find a line
around him. Mann took the checkers with
Doughty a close second. Steen Hanson, Heide
Sahl and Robert Poole finished a distant third,
fourth, and fifth.
Moto two saw Doughty and Mann wrestle
for the holeshot and again Doughty took the
lead. Mann wasted no time as he tried to make
the same move on Doughty in the same spot he
did in moto one. It was close, but Doughty is a
quick study, and this time he cut off Mann's
line. With Mann in hot pursuit, Doughty held
his opponent at bay to win the moto by about
three seconds and take the overall for the day.
Manit humbly finished second, and Steen Hanson got.the best of Poole and Sahl for third.
Californian Tim Nash had a great day as
well, winning both motos in some very competitive racing against England's Kevin Reed in the
Over 30 Expert class and defeating flat-tracker
john Hateley and Randy Lewis with doublemoto victories in the Sportsman 250cc Expert.
In the Over 30 motos, Nash, aboard a '74
Husqvarna, had his hands full with Reed and
his 72 Cheney BSA 500. Nash and Reed fought
tooth and nail, but Nash held on for the win.
Reed took second, followed by Halpin, Carter,
and Price.

Kerr captures flag at Swan MX
By Kat Spann
TYLER, TX, OCT. 13
jonathan Kerr took the win in the 60cc Open class
at round four of the second annual Texas State
Championship Series, held at Swan Cycle Park.
Ryan Hartley grabbed the first-moto
holeshot with Kerr, Brad Wolfe and Bryan
Zachary in close contention. By the end of lap
one, Kerr took the lead. When Wolfe fell in the
woods in lap two, Zachary moved up to challenge Kerr, but settled for second. Quinn Harris
and Ryan Grantom staged quite a battle for
third. It was a photo finish, with Harris a half a
knobby in front of Grantom at the end. Brandon
Thompson took the number-five spol
Zachary nabbed the second-moto holeshot,
but Kerr was breathing down his airbox. Brad
Wolfe tried to fight off Ryan Grantom for third.
which Grantom took on lap three. Zachary and
Kerr raced rim to rim for four grueling laps, taking it down to the last few feet with the stands
going nuts. In the final tum, Zachary opted for
the less-rutted outside line while Kerr made a
daring inside cut and went under Zachary at the
exit to take the checkered flag a split hair in
front of Zachary.
Brad Cannon once again proved that he ~.as
what it takes to win the 125ee Open event. Kevin
Vines took the first-moto holeshot, chased by
Cannon and Mark Thompson. Cannon and
Thompson both passed the leader in short order.
Cannon took another lap to separate himself
from Thompson, who then had to hold off
Dustin Cantrell and Bryan Piccirelli. john Adam
gated 10th off the start and worked his way
toward the front, finishing fifth behind Cannon,
Thompson, Cantrell, and Piccirelli.
Moto two saw Thompson with the holeshot .
and Vines in his rearview mirror. Cannon raced
up behind Vines, accompanied by Cantrell, with
both passing Vines on the first Jap. Cannon
