Prochnavys prey on StarWest Motocross By Tony Alessi MORENO VALLEY, CA, OCT. 19 The dynamic duo of Brandon and Matthew Proch navy domin.ated the action in the 80cc Beginner class with a 1-2 knockout of the top two positions during the next-to-Iast round of the fall contingency series held at StarWest Motocross Park. Brandon Prochnavy made it very clear from the drop of the gate in the first 80cc (12-16) Beginner race that he was here to win, and win is exactly what he did by pulling the holeshot and leading every lap of each race. The Prochnavy family - consisting of two SOcc riders, a Pee Wee, a 60cc and Vet racer seemed to be competing in almost every race of the night. ' MOO B NOV (D-8): 1. jake Huk!ff (LEM); 2. Friedman fries Castaic MX By Tony Alessi CASTAIC CA, OCT. 20 Clay Friedman got a long-overdue victory in the Vet Novice division after downing arch rival Robert Von Schncdian during the final round of the sse Pit Pro Factory Sponsorship Series held at Castaic Lake. Von Schncdian pulled a typical holeshot in the first Vet ovice race. Friedman started the race in fourth, but quickly moved into second not far behind Von Schnedian. Friedman kept tabs on Von Schnedjan the remainder of the race but was unable to mount any serious challenges. Friedman turned the tables in the second moto by pulling the holeshot and leading every lap of the race. Von Schnedian did attempt a last-ditcheffort pass 12 feet from the checkered flag, but inadvertently cut the track and was denied the position. In the end Friedman got in the last word with his big SSC first-place trophy for the win in the Vet Novice division. Future Mini champion Chris Nihan posted a double-mota sweep of the 80cc Novice class aboard his FMF-luned Suzuki. Nihan raced closely with fellow FMF racer J.R. Terry during both motos. But in the end, Nihan seemed to be a little bit more determined to score the overall victory. Terry was runner-up for the day while Honda riders Shane Smith and Mike Meadows rounded out the top four. By Clay light WOODLAND, WA, OCT. 18 Despite torrential rain and blustery winds, near· Iy 100 riders turned out for the Vintage Dirt Racing Association's opening motocross at Woodland Motocross Park, where Joe Casey overcame the elements to win the 250cc and Over 30 Expert classes. Jon· Morgan did similarly to post 250cc and Over 30 Open Intermediate victories. Seventeen riders battled for positions in the 250cc Sportsman class, but Casey came out on top of the "field aboard his 1974 Honda Elsinore. Casey and Ron Fish battled back and forth in both motos. Casey won the first moto, but Fish overtook him in the second and at that point it looked to be Fish's race. Fish floundered as his bike expired in one of the many water holes around the course, and Casey went on to anotherwin. Morgan, riding a Yamaha MX250, won the lntermediate class, beating Marty Welter and Bob McDamel, while Travis Murray and Randy Brown traded moto wins for first and second in the Amateur portion ahead of Todd Bodham. A larger-than·usual Women''j class was won by Suzuki rider Lana Ingham by virtue of her 21 placings, beating Luanne Swisher's 1-2 and· Kathy Robarge's 3-3. Monty Price proved his mud-riding prowess by taking the Open Almost Vintage-class win with a 1-1 sweep. Price, the lone Expert in the field, fended off brief challenges from Kenny Brynn in moto one and Da,le Hodson in moto two. The Intermediate win went to Mike Olsen with 2-2 placings. The 27-rider 250cc Almost Vintage class was the day's largest. Yamaha rider Rich Sipp sloshed to impressive wins by beating fellow Expert riders Bob Rush and Dougie Eckelman. Mike Alf rode to a win in the Intermediate portion ahead of Bill Brown and Matt Schweitzer. Monty Blocrnke won the Amateur portion. Results OPEN: 1. Reid Scaario (CZ); 2. Dan Weislogal (Hus); 3.
