Top 250cc A rider Johnny Cambell took second overall, Senior A-class rider Robbie Neeley was ~ third overall, and 200cc A winner Tommy Veator was fourth. All of these riders had five points, but RlIIney had the best score at the tie-breaker checks. The enduro consisted of 65 miles of trail in the Apalachacola National Forest, 33 before the gas and 32 after. The first half had four checks, with members of the Tallahassee Trail Riders checking riders in and out of each section. After the gas there were four checks, all in / out. The second half of the race was easier than the first, with more jeep roads. The first section was 11 miles long and contained a lot of new trail. Ramey blazed through with a five-point loss, as did Ashley Brewer, Scott Miller, Johnny McCoy, Doug Massencup, Robert Person, Veator and Neeley. Steven Smith, Michael Grizzle and Jason Chambers all lost six points while Jason Chancey and Jeff Harris both lost seven. The club placed an auxiliary gas stop at the 11.7-mile mark, followed by a reset with a going-in check followed by 23 miles of woods. Ashley Brewer changed a wheel at the reset and was late going in, losing one point. This section was the most difficult of the day and many points were lost, but it seems the club had miscalculated and placed the check too close to the gas stop· so the check was thrown out. Miller and Steve Saunders should have taken advantage of the auxiliary gas stop and added some gas to their bikes. Both riders lost five points in the first se~tion but ran out gas within a mile of the gas stop. By the time Miller and Saunders refueled they had BROOKSVTLLE, FL, OCT. 6 Team Green rider Steven Smith showed everyone at the Orange State Enduro in the WithJacoochee State Forest that he was the man to beat. Smith took the overall win in the fifth round of the SETRA Enduro Series with a Joss of only four points. "I really like this enduro," Smith said. "To me, it's the best of the Florida races. I didn't have any problems all day; 1just like sand." The enduro started in the 2,BOO-acre Croome Cycle Park and traveled outside the park into the state forest and into some of the best trails one could ride. There were roughly 60 miles of trail in the race, with no roads at aIL Luckily, the Suncoast Trail Riders added some generous resets to give everyone a break and get back on time. The terrain was quite varied, going from sandy to whoop sections to rooty trails. There even were some rocks here and there and an abandoned quarry the enduro went through that gave the riders a challenge, along with a hi]] or two to climb. Temperatures were mild but muggy all day. It sprinkled on and off all day, just enough to mess up riders' goggles. Traction proved to be excellent as the sand absorbed all the water, making for near-perfect riding. The enduro started on the edge of the park, with check number one being the start, and immediately went into a 16-mile woods section. It started out fairly fast, then tightened up with a few muddy areas, but at an 18 mph speed average, most everyone zeroed the second check. Scott MlIler got caught a little off guard and bu med the check, costing him two points. The trail continued, but changed to a 24 mph average at the nine-mile mark. The first reset and auxiliary gas was at 16 miles and the -riders needed a little break. Check three was a going-in check right after the reset, and all the AAs zeroed it, with the exceptio.n of Franklin Ramey; this time he got ... caught a little ahead of his minute, losing two points. There were 19 miles of trail left to go before the gas break There were some very tight trails along with faster sectjons, and some of those had a lot of whoops. Ramey, Smith, Miller and Ashley Brewer all dropped one point in the section before check four, as did 250cc A riders Johnny McCoy and Steve Saunders and 200cc A rider Tommy Veator. From check four to the gas stop was roughly three miles. The gas was a known control. Many of the riders assumed that check four was the last check before the gas, but the club fooled them and threw in one at the gas, catching almost everyong by surprise. Smith, Miller, Brewer and Veator all dropped one, while Ramey, McCoy and Saunders each dropped two. The first half of the race had a close battle going on. Brewer and Veator each had two points, followed by McCoy and Saunders with three each. Miller and Ramey had four and five, respectively. A restart after the gas sent riders immediate- ly into a lO-mile woods section. This is where the club ran everyone through the old quarry. At the 62-mile mark there was a reset before heading back into the woods. At check seven, Smith and Brewer had fast times through the section, both riders dropping two points. Miller, McCoy, Saunders, Veator and Ramey each dropped three. Check eight saw Smith, Ramey and McCoy the only riders zeroing the check, while Brewer, Miller and Saunders each lost one. It was Veator's tum to bum a check, and he lost two early points at check eight. Eighty-three miles into the race - resets included - was the second auxiliary gas. Ten miles of woods remained. All the riders made the last section on time. At race's end, Smith had four points for the top position. Smith also was on team X-MX, which won the Team class, followed by Brewer with a five for first AA and second overall. McCoy was third overall with a six, which also gave him first in 2S0cc A; McCoy also was a member of TeamX-MX. Saunders had seven points for second 250cc A and fourth overall. Veator had seven for fifth overall and first 200cc A. Ramey finished the day with an eight. He rode strong in the second half, but said, " After] burned that check, I just couldn't seem to get it together the rest of the day." Steve Hardeman was smoking all day and won the Open A class. Robert Pearson, another Team-X member, won the Vet A class while his teammate Robbie Neeley once again showed his superi.ority in the Senior A class and took first. followed by R. Osborne. Stewart strong at Worldsports Motocross By Kyle Myers DADE OTY, FL, OCT. 13 lames Stewart was the top gun in the Mini class at round four of the Worldsports Gold Cup Series, held at the Pa!iCo County Fairgrounds. Stewart won both the Super Mini and SOcc (7-11) divisions as over 350 riders competed for Suzuki and Yamaha contingency money. In the first Super Mini moto, Stewart jumped out to the early lead with Tyson Hadsell, Troy Adams, Jesse Adams and Paul Perebijno following. Hadsell pas.'led Stewart as the field entered the sand section for the first time on the opening circuit. Hadsell opened up a two-second lead over Stewart as Dan Truman and Ryan Davis moved into fifth and sixth place. Truman then slipped by Jesse Adams, as did Davis on the next lap. When the whi te flag carne out, Hadsell still enjoyed a slight lead over Stewart that he would hold on to until the finish. Troy Adams cruised home a soUd third as Davis was aU over Truman. Davis flew by Truman with half a lap to go to finish fourth, and Truman rounded out the top five.
