The first few laps saw Carr inching away, but after about four laps, Jorgensen started to whittle away at his lead. By lap seven they were staging a race within a race. For the next 20 laps, they were never more than six bike lengths apart and ran side-by-side numerous times through the turns. Noyes had a firm hold on third place with William Arbagast, Brad Spencer, Rob Damron, Paul Iwanagwa and Frank Kye battling fiercely behind him. Lapped traffic came into play around lap 10. Racers were going through the corners two and three abreast. Carr and Jorgensen. diced inside and outside of the other racers as the lead changed four or five times. An unfortunate incident on the front straight took out Noyes and gave third to Arbagast. Carr managed to hold off the the hard-charging Jorgensen to win by inches over his younger rival. In deference to the teen-age runner-up; the club switched fro..m the traditional champagne to sparkling apple cider. They also armed the people around the podium with Silly String to retaliate against the spraying cider. The result was messy but lots of fun. The Vet class had a surprise winner. Jerry Bernardo of Motoworld 2 took the checkered ahead of Arbogast. Bernardo got a bad start and was working his way backward at an alarming rate. An anonymous track worker showed him the fast line through the infield, enabling hm to make up incredible. ground on the leaders. Arbagast raced on the long course to take the real win. The Pro National was distinguished by unique strategies, passing techniques and crossups over the jumps. Eric Bostrom grabbed the holeshot with Frank Nye and Chris Carr in tow. Carr disposed of Nye on the third lap, as did Brad Spencer. Nye came back to join the fight with Carr and Bostrom. While the front-runners paced themselves for the last five laps, Johnny Murphree was on the gas and charging up to the front. Murphree· made his presence known as he stole the lead on lap 13. Carr took soil samples in the first righthander on this lap, but was back up and running in sixth place, approximately 25 seconds behind race leaders Murphree and Nye. By the white-flag lap, Carr was up to fourth and a couple of bike lengths from Nye, whose race ended mysteriously on the 19th of 20 laps. Carr disposed of Bostrom and set his sights on the leader, making a great run out of the last tum but coming up a few feet short of the win. Murphree was thrilled with his victory on a motorcycle from David de Camp. ADout pulling off on lap 19, ye said: ''I'm not sure what happened.
